"Halloween Hollers"
Maybe this thread replaces, for a week, "Monday Musings" and highlights that today is a favorite day of our youth (less so now that we have to buy, not get, candy). I liked getting those nickels, instead of candy, in my Halloween bag which back then was real coin.

Yes, EMU gave away, like candy, the game Saturday.

EMU / WSU is a week from today. WSU has changed its MBB staff from the days of Greer, Lorenzo Neely, etc.

And election day lines up with EMU / Akron FB. NBA is not playing games on election night so it will be CFB vs. election coverage. CNN Breaking News: "EMU stops Akron on 3rd and 1."

Fortunately, the World Series ends, this week, before snow starts to fall in Philly. Don't know if Denver has gotten any snow yet, but MLB doesn't have to worry about the Rockies playing in the World Series any time soon. Now, I have to wonder about the Twin Cities.

And yes, four Spartans have been suspended indefinitely. If MSU can, somehow, win 3 of their last 4, I'd like to see them in Detroit vs our guys. I have NO idea how MSU will play Saturday. They could come out flat, defeated, etc. and lay an egg. Something for bettors to ponder. Maybe MSU tanks like EMU tanked English's last year.

BTW, I find the MSU post game incident more disturbing then Emoni's arrest. One was full of wanton assault. The other a crazy set of happenstances without any intention of violating firearms law by the one arrested.

Talking of bets and bettors. I do think the EMU FB Ov/Un line was 6.5 wins (no a tie doesn't count as a half win). The half is to avoid bets which end up a 'tie' or 'push.' If team A is a 3 point favorite and wins 24 - 21 it is a 'push.' Sports books don't like it. All money bet is refunded. Also if the Ov/Un was 6 everyone would take the over with 7, 8,... wins a win and 6 a push. That would be a sweet bet to make. Only '79 with his 5 - 7 prediction would probably take the Under.

And, last but not least, October is primed to be the best month for the Dow since some of us were at EMU (1976). So if you invested in Dow 30 stock fund, you are about 14% ahead for the month of October.

"Stock futures slide on Monday with the Dow on track for best month since 1976"

Better than collecting nickels in your Halloween goodie bag. 03-cloud9 03-cloud9 03-cloud9 03-cloud9 (I rate October for 4 Cloud Nines for the Dow).

Hope university endowments had a lot of Dow stocks in their portfolios. 03-idea

I really don't follow or trade the Dow. I do however do follow the S&P 500 and Russell 2000 and have both indexes in my 401 k. I think the FED wants a recession so I am thinking we have not seen the true bottom of the market yet. Meanwhile higher interest rates mean higher money market rates.

One thing to keep in mind: The markets try to guess 3 - 6 months ahead (these pros are not dumb. They don't play or trade the obvious).

They are already trying to judge when the Fed might ease their rate hikes and when the economy may bottom out (perhaps a mild recession) and begin to grow.

They use their econometric models and try to forecast how these rate hikes will effect the economy (say 3 - 6 months down the line) and how it will effect corp. profits, which sectors will win and which will lose, etc.

Dear steve,
Isn't the economy on the way back with the latest gross national product statement, unemployment still at an all time low, gasoline prices falling, (I paid $3.57 a week ago) wages up? The only drag, in my opinion, is inflation. Still around 8%, but could be dropping as well.

The economy is a tough beast to understand.

First, the effects of fed rate hikes has not been really felt yet. It takes time for those hikes to slow the economy.

As you indicate, the economy, EXCEPT inflation, is kind of goldilocks, just warm enough to keep growing slowing, not fast enough to make the labor shortage worse or drive up demand for service employment as well as energy.

My understanding of inflation is simple: It can be on the GOODS side or the SERVICES side. Goods inflation has been tamed. The real inflation now is in the service sector which is labor intensive and feeling shortages (think teachers, laborers, etc.). Immigration slowed the last say 4 or 5 years and we are short say 1 - 2M workers. We loss some do to long Covid. Also, child care issues pulled some women out of the labor force.

Gas is tough. With the war in Ukraine it can go south without help from the Strategic Petroleum Reserve.

My favorite line is: The overall economy is fine (employment, wages, corp. profits, etc.) it is INFLATION that people hate.

My take, and take it for what it is worth: The economy won't be semi-normal until the Ukraine war ends. This war isn't academic. Some war between two countries half ways across the globe. It is effecting the whole world.

We agree Ken. I would rather see an America at work rather than an America laid off. The State Budget this year will have another healthy surplus with the rainy day fund at an all time high.

I don't know where to put this nor do I want to create a thread for it, since I don't feel I have the right to
I have been sitting on this and finally chose to come out with it now since I was given more info on it
this updated info was given to me on saturday by some coaches
the current situation could change but this is what is going on
Castro as of now only has 10 girls ready
2 to 3 are walk-ons
The reason he has a lack of girls, is that a bunch of them are in-eligible
The university is waiting for the 2nd half or the end of the season to fire him

The writing was on the wall when he didn't win with his most talented squads. I am surprised because his recruiting chops indicate he would have checked the eligibility box but he was desperate and took chances and it didn't work out. The women's team has been on downward track

What do you mean?
I told you guys what coaches told me
That's what they said
I don't think the roster will remove ineligible players
I can call some coaches right now and see if I misheard what they said

I'm staying far from this discussion because I know almost nothing of EMU WBB.

That said, a couple points:

1). Usually when one of posters says, "I was told..." (or similar) I believe them. As discussed with Emoni, there are posters who have various contacts with either players, or friends of players or family of players or whatever. West Campus isn't exactly like the CIA in Langley.

2). The EMU WBB team will play Monday before the MBB game. If players are ineligible, etc. we will know. They will not play. It will be up to us to 'guess' why players are not playing. I agree that ineligible players are not removed from the roster. I believe players remain on the roster until they are off the team. I assume some of the players will 'cure' their academic issues.

I didn't mean to question your post more so the fact the roster didn't reflect what the coaches were telling you. Either way I think Castro is a dead man walking this season. Unfortunate. He was a good recruiter but player development well....its hard to find coaches who can recruit well and develop players well. Usually they are one or the other.

'79, I think I "answered" it.
They can be academically ineligible AND still on the roster, so long as they are still in school. NO contradiction to the facts.
