RE: Renewing with Flo
Four year extension with Flo and CBSSN.

https://caasports.com/news/2023/2/9/foot...ports.aspx

Ten figure deal with Flo and increased requirements for production. Doing quick math. $10,000,000 / 14 teams = $714,000

That's about $180k per year over 4 years per school. I still think the low hanging fruit is a local or regional media deal for linear tv.

Do you know what your annual athletics revenue is to know what percent of it would be from $180,000? Hofstra requires all coaches except for Men's Basketball to fundraise $150,000 per year.

RE: Renewing with Flo
I used to watch at least 8-10 Hofstra and UNCW games in addition to all the Tribe games, pre-Flo Sports. Now I watch none. The local market stuff is fine for you guys and I get it, but for Tribe fans that are scattered several hours from Williamsburg or those without cable at all, it doesn't work.

The price for FLO is not worth it to me. Not willing to pay the fee. But admittedly, I have never had it. As such, I have watched more games in other conferences the last 4 years. With other streaming products, you get more total content for a lower price and even content to appeal to nonsports fans. Even though the broadcast quality was sometimes meh, I could always access it in the past via the schools individually. I don't love everything on ESPN for sure, but it is easy and convenient for sports viewing. Plus, games are available to watch later or delayed if scheduling is a problem. All at a price much lower than FLO with vastly superior content. I'd be fine with Peacock or Paramount or whatever as well, just something that broadcasts to a much wider audience than FLO. Plus, with other streaming, you can cancel and do things month to month in a more affordable way.

It's all lipstick on a pig and Flo is most definitely swine .

RE: Renewing with Flo
TribePride91, without quoting your post, I will say that Flo lets you watch games later, so that is not something that makes ESPN Plus better. For Men's and Women's Basketball, you can watch any game that Flo has going back to 2019-2020. I did not check other sports, but I am assuming that is true for other sports.

RE: Renewing with Flo
New guy thoughts here

Personally, I believe the NC (A&T, Elon, Campbell and UNCW) and SC (CoC) schools should come together and negotiate a contract with linear networks within our footprint. Either Nexstar Media Group or Sinclair Broadcast Group...personally I prefer Nexstar since they have a station in Charlotte. The Carolina schools can even add Hampton and W&M if they want to participate.

Nexstar - Charlotte, Spartanburg SC (Greenville and Asheville too), Charleston, Raleigh, Greensboro, Greenville NC, Richmond and Norfolk
Sinclair - Greenville Spartanburg, Charleston, Raleigh, Greensboro, Greenville NC, Richmond and Norfolk

Big South had a partnership with Ingles and Nexstar to show football games. Personally, I believe the demand signal for CAA games including NC and SC schools will be higher than the BSC demand. The schools can approach Lowes which is HQ'd in Charlotte...

Separate deals for football and basketball seasons...

Big South Corporate Partner Ingles will feature eight ESPN+ games broadcast locally and regionally on Nexstar Networks’ over-the-air stations throughout the Big South footprint.

I'm a UNCW fan first so the only sports content I passionately care about is UNCW basketball, baseball, some soccer, softball, volleyball, etc. For what amounts to $10 per month, I can watch all things UNCW for not much more than the cost oo one meal at Chic Fil A. I can also rewatch games I miss or just for the fun of going back.

Whether i'm a big fan of Flo Sports is irrelevant, it is what it is and I want to watch the games since i'm not a local in Wilmington and can only attend a few games. The fact our contracts with CBSSN and Flo are getting better financially, there are requirements to improve broadcasts, and there are more games on the CBSSN is at least a step in the right direction. Those who are in charge of athletic departments and those who run the universities obviously are seeing a benefit to this arrangement.

This looks like a "one step at a time" process to me. CAASports provided each school the opportunity to produce their own broadcasts. At first, they were just awful with single fixed cameras for many schools. After the first year they slighly improved overall. Once FloSports came on, the production levels began to increase pretty dramatically IMO, although there are certainly differing levels of production. Now we are seeing the conference placing production level requirements to assure the CAA is putting out a quality product across the conference. If the CAA is going to expand our viewership in the future, we cannot put the cart before the horse and do so with low quality production broadcast widely. The question then becomes "what's the next step?"

Based on the fact we are enhancing our relationship with the CBS Sports Network, it seems logical expanding even further with the CBS broadcast family is the next step. It's likely we just weren't there yet and the enhanced production requirements will overcome a barrier that existed. It could also be that CBS is looking to see what the CAA can do now that we are completely out of the "Covid years". Don't forget that we never fully had an chance to see what could happen with Flo since games were cancelled and fans weren't permitted at games over two seasons.

So, i'm willing to support what we have, knowing that what we have is expanding and improving. We'll see what happens in four years.

Unless you or I have the authority to change it, it doesn't matter if you or I think it's "fine". So, I can only go by what is and comment on it. The fact is the arrangement is improving with more money, better production requirements and more games on the CBSSN. Whether or not you like the total package, even with the improvements, doesn't really matter. These are just the facts. And i'm only speculating about where this is going based on what's happening today. What I know is I can watch UNCW sports for what I consider to be a nominal amount, regardless of the national exposure it gets or whether I like the platform. I've never had any technical issues.

These are only my opinions based on facts and do not represent anyone beyond me.

Ok and I’m telling you whether they change going forward or not your opinion is silly at best and a horrid defense of a now northern-biased league (as evident by their decision to keep the tournament in DC the next 3 years).

You’re defending the indefensible and it’s laughable. Go work for the CAA if you love it so much because the takes you’re peddling on this league are most certainly anti-UNCW. Do better.

Joey D = Carpetbagger.

RE: Renewing with Flo
82, you began you're statement with "I'm a UNCW fan"
I'd argue you are one of the biggest UNCW fans

The biggest problem with Flo is that it is only appealing to people like you, BIG UNCW fans.

UNCW athletics once again has a big wall in front of it making it incredibly difficult to get anyone but the hardcore 82s of the world to come on board the bandwagon.

Additionally, FloSports has grown into a TOXIC brand. You wouldn't be getting this much negative feedback if they simply paywalled CAA.TV at $10 to $15/month. You would still have people be upset for sure but not like this. Flo is just not an company we should be doing business with. Additionally the negative feedback was completely ignored. So now not only is UNCW hard to follow but they are deliberately doing something that pisses off their base. That's bad business

Flo doesn't do anything for UNCW or the CAA except give them money to buy CBSSN games. So yes we do get a handful of games on a national TV channel but the tradeoff is outside of those games no one watches the other 20+.

The money we are getting now is something I guess but I would be willing to bet we are sacrificing much more than the $120K in other areas that are harder to monetize.

RE: Renewing with Flo
My Dad used to watch nearly all the games and no longer does purely because of Flo.

Just one anecdotal example but it’s telling. And there are many other anecdotal examples out there.

Still waiting for this pathetic league to do one thing that benefits the southern schools under Joey D. A&T addition was a small blip. Divisions announced yet? Whenever that happens it’s still not enough. We get screwed at every turn.

Carpetbagger.

D.C. is reasonable, not northern-biased. You're a fan of the second most southern team, I'm a fan of the third most northern team (a little south of Stony Brook), and neither school deserves the CAA Tournament within a couple of hours of them. If you factor in that you and Charleston get the highest attendance, you could say it should be south of D.C., but where? Would the CAA ever go back to Richmond, a city with two teams in the same other conference? Norfolk is near two CAA teams, but W&M gets average attendance by CAA standards, Hampton gets low attendance, and both of them are bad teams. Anywhere in North Carolina or South Carolina would be unfair to the northern teams. The CAA Tournament gets low attendance, so renting a venue that is too big would waste money and make it look empty.

North Charleston was a perfect spot. The location doesn’t have to be central. What northerner seriously would take issue with a nice southern vacation in early March? Hell, put it in Florida, Hawaii or the Bahamas for all I care. People like warm destinations that time of year.

A fan of a northern school being dismissive of southern schools with average attendance levels is just as laughable as a UNCW fan unreasonably defending FLO.

While WM and other southern schools may have average attendance numbers, they still do better than most of not all of the northern schools. The northern fans do ZERO for attendance at their own home games, thus they shouldn’t even be given a voice concerning location of a conference tournament.

Like 08 said, for the 12 northern fans that show up to the CAAT, in all likelihood hood at least 10 of the 12 would probably enjoy some warmer weather to go along with it without complaint.

The CAA is never going to change for the better,it's been garbage for at least 10 years and continues to go downhill in all respects. UNCW has made the decision to stick with it and will suffer for it long term . Flo is just part of the overall problem with the CAA but it is annoying as hell if you want to watch anything close to a semi pro broadcast and baseball is just 100% total BS -i would rather watch LiveStats on my iphone than that horseshit.

Exactly, the northern fans won’t even show up if the tournament was at one of their home gyms so what’s the difference?

It’s one thing for 82 to suggest this is our reality and might as well get used to it. It’s another entirely to outright defend these decisions. Does Joey D have compromising pictures of him or something? Blink twice if so, 82. lol.

The caa tourney in dc is in a high crime area and will not attend while it is there. I think richmond would be a better location. I went to 25 caa touneys till it went to baltimore.
