Yep. One of the problem with boards like this, is that we examine our warts with a microscope and don't realize others also have those same warts.

A little like a teenage girl who stands in front of a mirror and looks incessantly at her face looking for imperfections, never realizing that all other teenagers have their problems too.

I don’t think anyone is scrutinizing Bates. Some are trying to explain how the situations are different, that’s all. People here are trying to lump them together in order to hypothesize that UM received preferential treatment. To that I would say:

1) It’s UM, so who cares one way or another?
2) The cases are not the same.

Frankly, I would love to see this thread nuked into high heaven, but people really get rage boners against UM for whatever reason.

More similarities than differences in the case. Shockingly similar.

There is a tendency to be upset if "they received fairer treatment than us"`? It is as American as cherry pie.

The differences are significant enough to warrant differential treatment.

But wasn't he driving without a license? Also having 4 ounces of weed is over the 2.5 ounce limit and you have to be 21 to legally possess it.

The UofM player was also driving without a license.

Don't remember reading if Smith had been drinking. Regardless, drinking or smoking are kind of secondary to a felony charge about weapons.

The big difference, other than the S/N issue is: Emoni was driving a family car and a family owned gun. Smith apparently was driving his own car and owned the gun. Being a 'wordsmith' one possessed a gun while the other 'possessed' a gun (in quotes). To call upon my knowledge of English: One ACTIVELY possessed a gun; the other PASSIVELY possessed a gun.

Example: Last year, I transported someone's luggage to SoCal. I also had my luggage. I knew what was in mine. Did not know what was in the other. Sometimes folks send luggage ahead of themselves (e.g., if leaving from work). If there were female related things, surely they were not mine (Hint: I'm not a cross dresser and can't wear clothes for some weighing 120).

We have totally opposite interpretations on the Mazi case and the Emoni case, but we might have some common ground on how to handle this… KILL THIS THREAD.

The point of my post was that UM board is not self criticizing publicly, they are coming up with reasons to support their player, admin, etc. That is NORMAL, SELF-RESPECTING human behavior. If your brother or sister commits a crime, sure you recognize it privately, push them to make it right, and so on. But you don’t go around publicly condemning them and drawing attention to it- you keep it private and in the family. That is an extreme analogy, of course, only intended to illustrate a point.

The fundamental similarities is that Emoni and Mazi BOTH committed victimless crimes and are NOT posing any threat to society-> so who cares, let’s all let it go. But I think if you are going to chime in on the debate, then show some self interest and support those associated with your alma mater. That is what UM does, and maybe part of why they get special treatment (small part).

Bovine, I am not trying to argue with you or anyone else, that’s just how I see it and how I choose to publicly discuss this case. Support my alma mater and those associated with it.

Steve, I think you are 100% dead on with your interpretations. But if others on this board disagree with us, we are not going to change their mind. It does more harm than good to continue to debate them. Let’s kill this thread.

Let’s move on. Go EMU!!! 04-cheers

Agreed 100%. It’s been a yucky thread from day one. Let’s move forward.

RE: Emoni is a Free Man
I know, I know. But the only reason I'm posting because Tony Paul answered my question on Twitter (why Smith and Bates were treated differently.) Bates was arrested by Washtenaw Co Sheriff while Smith by Ann Arbor police.

And Smith was treated with kid gloves by UofM; Bates was not, by EMU.

Equal justice under the law, etc. is more complicated that it appears. Bates got a raw deal, all over. OR UofM has a pretty lax standard for student conduct.

https://www.detroitnews.com/story/sports...729548007/

EDIT: Re-read the article. The Bates' gun was UNLOADED.

Bates really got a raw deal. Once again, the main issue was NOT with the Washtenaw County prosecutor but the local police and universities.

There is a suggestion in the article about where the violation did or did not occur. I wonder if Emoni had crossed into Ypsilanti city, the county sheriff would not have been able to stop him.
