From Mettlen "JMU MBB hosted Norfolk State in a closed scrimmage today. Not a ton of details, but heard the Dukes won by double-digits, impressed defensively. Tyree Ihenacho and Julien Wooden"
https://twitter.com/Shane_DNRSports/stat...err6Orwufw

thats pretty great considering Norfolk State went to the tourney last year. They were a 16 seed, but a pretty good team that returns their best players

These closed scrimmages are infinitely more valuable than the “games” against Valley Forge, Carlow, Gallaudet, Limestone, Eastern Mennonite, Chowan, and Alice Lloyd.

I’m pretty sure there is a limit for the number of closed scrimmages allowed if refs are brought in.
Only 14 days from tip-off.

Wow.
I wish I was more excited about this season, but I'm really getting sick of this program disappointing me. I suppose I'm a glutton for punishment as I'll probably still watch every game.
I think the schedule is contributing to my lack of excitement. Even if we crush the OOC schedule I'm not sure what it really says about our team.

Has anyone received their season basketball tickets yet?

Edwards might be my favorite player. If he keeps the improvement trajectory going, he could be lights out as a senior.

RE: 2022-23 Men's Basketball
Interesting article. Hopefully Edwards can be a glue guy, jack of all trades and master of none. Seems like he can be a backup to several positions and still get pretty good minutes subbing for different roles on the floor.
My key question is will Vado Morse be restricted by coach? He needs to be. Way too often he is out of control and firing up low percentage shots which kills the team. You simply can’t have a guy taking 14 shots a game and only shooting 37%. That is losing basketball by anyone’s definition.

Would love to see Nacho take a lot of his minutes as he is the exact opposite. Reluctant to shoot and always a pass first guy to find easybuckets.

Kenpom anticipates a 100 spot improvement for JMU off of last years end of season kenpom result. With returners, Freidel and the fact I feel like you guys kind of just let go of the rope last year with nothing to play for it makes a lot of sense to expect a big jump. Kenpom projects JMU 1st in SunBelt.

RE: 2022-23 Men's Basketball
Injuries last year really impacted the team. I know some one here were talking about a potential at large bid after the UVA win, but then the wheels fell off the wagon hard. After a few losses (and the chance of an at large long gone) there was truly nothing to play for besides pride.

2023 Kenpom pre-season rankings are out. JMU #127, top ranked in the SB.

Home OOC stinks, but road games against UVA is #5 and UNC is #9 are great opportunities if JMU can pull off an upset.

Anyone have access to the current odds for JMU to win the Sun Belt regular season? I'd love to put a few shillings on them.

RE: 2022-23 Men's Basketball
The boys will have another closed scrimmage this weekend. How coach shuffles playing time will be interesting because we know somebody will get their feelings hurt this year.
For him to lose all 3 of his Freshmen from last year feels like a wasted recruiting year.
I wonder why coach elects not to have an exhibition, but wastes home games on Valley Forge and Gallaudet. You would think the drawing power and legitimacy of a D-1 opponent would help the players and the paying fans be more invested.
You know the team cares very little about DIII teams and those home “games” will not interest the students or paying fans.

We should do better and it is surprising his contract does not have any scheduling stipulations that are fitting of the $100 million AUBC. I mean, why invest that much if you are only going to have 3 D-1 home games out of 13.

Maybe you should ask him? Or send a FOIA request for attempts at basketball scheduling?

RE: 2022-23 Men's Basketball
The fact Mettlen said JMU tried to schedule every single D1 program in Virginia sure makes it seem likely they tried a whole lot of others as well. Not that this schedule doesn't deserve criticism, but seems like the impact we currently have on strength of schedule makes it a tall task. I doubt they just wanted this weak ass schedule.

Whoop ass this year and it should get a little easier. If not, they sure need to do a better job of finding creative ways to get attractive opponents.

RE: 2022-23 Men's Basketball
This was always the case back in the day when JMU was a solid mid-major. I think we played Tech once or twice early in Lefty’s tenure and went 1-1. But generally, playing a mid-major is a lose-lose for a P5 school. Beat us and it’s expected. Lose to us and it’s a shocking upset. I can only assume that Carolina and UVA assume they’ll both beat us in their buildings this year.
