Mardi Gras actually started in Mobile before New Orleans. It seems like the city started a few years ago to reconnect to their roots.

Mobile has the distinction of the oldest continuously celebrated Mardi Gras in present day USA, but it wasn't the first Mardi Gras celebration in present day USA nor was Mardi Gras started in Mobile. It's a French import, hence its name.
