AAC extends TV contract with ESPN
Quote:The deal, which originally was to expire in 2032, has been extended through the 2033-2034 season. The extension came after the AAC lost the three schools and added the six.
“We negotiated with ESPN and they kept us whole, which was really remarkable, losing three of your premier teams,” Aresco said. “And in exchange for that, we extended our deal a couple of years. We are thrilled because we keep the exposure we had before and they also gave us enough revenue to bring on the six teams. ESPN has been great to us.”
While Aresco wouldn’t give details, at the time of the original deal, it was reported that schools would earn an average of $6.2 million per year. A source confirmed that the schools will be receiving in that same neighborhood from the deal.
“This conference is well-heeled financially,” Aresco said.

Yep, but I wonder how much we'll get initially. I thought when we first joined the AAC said the new members would be gradually brought up to that level.

And this probably be the case. The AAC holdovers will be making more than 6.2 million.

Adding the years helps make the math work on the ramp. Also perhaps gives the new lineup more time to increase value.
But being locked in that long could also hurt if the league overperforms while other conferences come up for renewal ahead of them.

This TV deal is ACC lite in terms of length of years. I don't like it at all.

I dont like the fact that we will be competing in a conference and not getting equal revenue shares.

It should be ACC lite because the ACC is a much better league

It’s my understanding that this won’t be the case the whole time, we will just gradually get to a full share. I believe this may have been done with the old Big East too, I’m not sure what happened when the AAC split occurred though.
Also, it appears UCF, BYU, and Houston won’t be getting full shares off the bat either. I think this is probably fairly common, it probably just isn’t advertised.

No that's not uncommon for schools "moving up" a step on the conference ladder.
It was reported yesterday "If Cal wants to go to the Big Ten with three other Pac-12 schools, would it be worth taking a reduced payout below the $75 million being received by UCLA but above a figure the Pac-12 can achieve in its new media rights deal?"

Ramps are typical. It helps keep existing teams whole on the realignment and is still a bump for the new teams.
The bigger thing to watch is whether it is a good thing to be locked in so long. Could end up being below market value but hard to say that now considering the change in teams.

Maybe, but at least a longer term contract gives you stability in your TV revenue. CUSA did a couple short term deals and it seems like they got worse. With this AAC contract, it should allow us to make some investments and know that TV revenue will be there for the foreseeable future.

As to extending the contract, that was probably a sweetener in exchange for not dropping the payout after losing the top three programs. It was only a two year extension. Given how much more money we'll be bringing in I'm not going to gripe

Not a "probably", it's explicitly stated in Aresco's statement.
