It depends on age.

A 25-year old with $1 million is top 1%.

But a 65-year old with $1 million is definitely middle class. And can't afford to retire anytime soon, either.


Bear in mind that in 1/3 of the country, owning almost any house puts you more than halfway to $1 million.

Also remember: $1 million in 2022 is the exact same as $800,000 in 2019.


I'd put the upper limit for middle class in 2022 at $2-3 million net worth.
