Great read, thanks for sharing. But to be clear, though we share a lot with these folks, here in Lafayette/Acadiana is very different from these folks. Biggest is the terrain: we are much more ‘prairie’ than ‘swampy.’

And I appreciate the clarification from you. This story seemed to be very much in the extreme bayou and I was curious how much their language was even around Lafayette. I have a southern Appalachian Highland accent to some extent but my accent from the edge of the western Piedmont where I grew up in proximity of the Appalachians but not in the mountains is not as strong as a person from the most rural areas of the neighboring counties around Boone, NC.
