Haha..the end is near...every 10 years or so!
With a viable option in the neighborhood to address much of the financial concerns. Why are Florida schools spending sooo much money in conferences that struggle with the same marketing challenges Ga state has? On a smaller scale in Atlanta as it relates to the broader issue but gaining traction with so much noise down the street to distract fans will leave them vulnerable. We'll see how this works out long term. The AAC and the B12 better get after it or in short time find themselves irrelevant. The Sun Belt is without a doubt rising. This is a MAJOR problem for them. It's a fact.
We just came from a far flung conference where all the money is west of the Mississippi and the Conference HQs are in Texas... Just like the AAC and B12 are now. We came from a conference where there were 6 teams over 1000 miles away from us to a conference with only 1 team that is over 1000 miles away. It gets old being in a conference with no identity or cohesion. It will start to wear thin on ECU and WVU.
So here's what is going to eventually happen.
1. The schools in the West and in the geographic center of the conferences will now call the shots because they have all the money and because they now have the conference HQ in their pocket.
2. Fans will not see the new additions as their equals and there will be some concern by ticket buyers and boosters as to why they can't play their regional rivals anymore. I mean, who are these schools, we don't have any connection with them.
3. WVU and ECU will start to question every decision made at their conference HQ.
4. The new schools won't say anything negative as they are just happy to be there. So the old school eastern teams won't have anyone to back them up.
5. Fans will get bored with forced rivals that feel manufactured.
6. After 5 years or so attendance will drop. I mean how many ECU fans are going to be pumped to play a North Texas team that always has a losing season? Maybe WVU will click with Cincinnati, but they're not VPI, Pitt, Penn State, Maryland, or Miami. That's who their fans want to play. ECU on the other hand is screwed. They can tell themselves they are excited, but they just added 5 schools that are perennial bottom feeders and who knows how UAB will fare with their new coach.
7. Add in that ECU and WVU have had horrible records since joining the AAC and B12 and their fans will be dropping like flies.
