RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Rockets a big win at Savage tonight over CMU in 4 sets. Huge, because last week CMU beat MAC West prohibitive favorite Ball State - twice. UT is 3-0 early in the season, tied with NIU for the west lead. NIU beat WMU this week, who was picked to finish 2nd.

Rockets played pretty poorly in the 1st set and lost it easily, but they turned around and ran out to a huge lead in set 2 and held on to win it. Did the same in set 3, big lead, CMU crawled back, but UT had enough to hold on. Set 4 was close the whole way, with CMU nosing ahead in the middle of the set. Then, setter Payton Morman left the match with what looked to be cramps, and was replaced by the Oregon St transfer Mary Kate Lopez. She did a terrific job, and UT stole the lead and never looked back. Morman came back to finish off the match.

Alt had 15 kills, Jada Bouyer with 12 and hit .310! But I give the game ball to libero Ryann Jaqua. She was all over the court on D, had 33 digs, and every time she got the serve the Rockets seemed to run off 3,4,5 or even 6 straight points. Was a really fun match to watch.

The two teams do it again tomorrow at 6PM. Brent said they are hoping to get 1000 people in attendance tomorrow.

Pretty fun to watch this staff build up the program from a VERY tough place when they came in. Oliver has done wonders getting talent in, building up the projects into solid pieces, and becoming quite competitive. Will be interesting to see how much further he takes this program and if anyone on staff would be able to take the reins should he make a move after some sustained success.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Rockets get their 1st MAC loss, losing to CMU in 4 sets, reversing last night's result. Although CMU played better, UT did not play well at all, save about the 1st 15 points of the 3rd set when they ran out to a huge lead, but then could barely hang onto it to win their only set of the match.

NIU wins again to stay undefeated and in 1st at 4-0. But, another surprise with Akron (3-10 overall and had not come close to winning a set in MAC play yet) beats WMU in 5 sets. So, the west is a mess right now, but UT needs to play a lot better to get a shot at finishing on top.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Volleyball got a 4 set win over Buffalo last night at Savage.

Up and down match as at times UT looked really good and then they ran into a couple long stretches when the mistakes just piled up again and again. They got helped by 20 service errors from UB (that's a huge number) and in the end were the better team. UB falls to 2-4. Three Rockets with double figure kills, led by Alt's double-double 13 kills & 10 digs. Filisi had a big match with 9 kills and 8 blocks out of the middle.

NIU beat previously undefeated BG last night to edge into 1st place at 5-1. UT and BG each a half-game behind at 4-1. Ohio, CMU & WMU close behind at 4-2.

Rockets play Akron this afternoon again at home and the game overlaps the NIU football game. Akron just played in Muncie last night, so it's a tough turnaround for them to travel to Toledo and play an afternoon match after that. Also, Akron is only 1-5 so far, but that one win came over a good WMU team, so UT can't have a let down.

Rockets beat Akron easily in straight sets to go 5-1. BG also wins in 5 over WMU, so that means UT, BG and NIU all tied for 1st.

Hard part of UT's schedule starts now, as the next 5 matches are against WMU, Ball State and then NIU.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Rockets played a pair against WMU in Kalamazoo, a place where historically it has been nearly impossible for UT to get a win. They come away with a split, losing in straight sets Friday, and winning in 4 today.

Friday's match was disappointing because the Rockets really beat themselves. Numerous overpasses, failed sets, and even a foot-fault allowed WMU to squeak by in the 1st 2 sets, and then the wheels came off in set three. Today was a different story, as UT dominated the Broncos in 3 of the 4 sets, and probably should have won set 2 as well, aside from a bad patch near the end where they lost the lead and couldn't recover.

Taylor Alt led UT today with 21 kills and added 11 digs. Sina Uluave also had a double-double in kills and digs. And Claire Eiden came through with 5 aces, several of which helped UT win an incredible 10 straight points off her serve in set 4.

Alt also passed the 1000 kill mark for her career this weekend. Rockets are 6-2 in MAC play now.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Rockets lose to Ball St at home in 4 sets.

Although UT's team has come a long way and is definitely in the top third or so of the MAC, just watching BSU shows how much further UT needs to go to be a real top team. BSU is better than UT in almost every aspect, especially their defense. Was amazed UT even was able to pull off 1 set, coming from behind is set 3 when BSU had a letdown for about 5-6 points. Rockets fall out of a tie for 1st in the west. Two matches at home this weekend against another good team in NIU. Need to win those to stay near the top.

I think I speak for more on here, but thats for these updates northcoast!

So, are our defensive problems more at the net or in the back line?

To my eye (not a volleyball expert) serve receive is still the weakest part of UT's game. Watch the best teams and almost every serve results in a near perfect pass to the setter, even when the players are stretching out to get the serve or diving. UT makes the perfect passes much less often and the setter has to go roaming for the ball, making the offense a lot harder to execute.

Teams like BSU also always seem to have near perfect court positioning and read where the ball is going very quickly.

Last year, UT was probably the best blocking team in the MAC. This year, it doesn't seem quite as good, but still decent.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Rockets played great tonight, beating NIU in straight sets. UT absolutely dominated the 1st 2 sets, and then came from behind to complete the sweep in set three. Alt and Bouyer 13 kills a piece to lead the Rockets. Vance added 10 while hitting an amazing .556. UT now 7-3 and the win moves them ahead of NIU in the standings.

And the race for 1st got tighter as somehow 1st place BG loses to EMU in 5 sets. EMU came in with only 2 wins, both over last place Miami, so this is a huge surprise. And EMU dominated the last 2 sets.

So the standings now have BG and BSU tied for 1st at 8-2, and UT and OU tied for 3rd at 7-3.

Rockets play NIU again tomorrow afternoon.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
VB team must have been watching the FB team, because they somewhat repeated the performance. After winning set 1, and having a match point in set 2, they ended up losing set 2, and then folding badly in sets 3 and 4 to lose to NIU.
Alt had 21 kills and the Rockets hit a respectable .242, but it wasn't enough.

That loss hurts, as the Rockets now fall into a tie for 4th with the same NIU team at 7-4, a game behind OU and 2 behind BG and BSU. They are only a half game ahead of CMU. Top 6 make the MAC tourney.

Nice article on Jada Boyer and how her love of science led her to UT.

and a lifetime of breaking bad jokes.

Those Summer camps are great for kids, getting access to things they don't have even at their regular schools and meeting college students and kids from all around the city. Worthwhile to support.

Rockets beat last place Miami in 4 sets. Miami actually outhit UT at an incredible .318, so I am not sure how UT came away with the win (stream was behind a paywall.) But, Miami had only won 3 sets in 11 MAC matches, so UT must have let them play above their level.

Ball State beat BG which means UT is only 1 game behind them, and they play BG at their place tomorrow. That's a huge match that will impact the standings.

RE: UT Volleyball 2022
Well, looks like UT could not pull off the trifecta yesterday (MAC XC championship, big win over EMU, and win over BG in VB) as the Rockets lose to BG in 4 sets.

UT looked all kinds of bad in set 1 and had to make two late runs just to get the set within 10 points at the end. They came back and played well in set 2, and led 24-22 but could not immediately close it out. Thankfully they hung on and won a long set 30-28. But in sets 3 and 4 they went back to bad, managing only a few decent small runs, surrounded by long stretches of poor play. BG, like Ball State before them, is just so much more polished top to bottom. Their hitters are hugely talented and their defense sharp. They almost never make bad mistakes, so they make you beat them, and UT just wasn't up to the task.

UT did get a couple bad calls, including one they reviewed where the ball clearly landed right on the line from the replay - even the BG announcers said there was no question the ball was good - but the ref strangely called it out. Oliver was incredulous. He was ticked off at the refs all day, and it wasn't completely clear why, but from his hand gestures I think he thought the BG setter was making double touches throughout the match and was never called once. He doesn't get favors from the refs often, as UT has resorted to regularly delaying matches by constantly stopping to wipe up the floor from supposed moisture when their opponents playing in the same gyms and diving on the floor as much or more at UT almost never do. I think most everyone believes now this is a delaying tactic and the floors are not that wet. Not saying that is causing the refs to make intentionally bad calls, just that it isn't going to win any favors with them in the long run and several refs this year have barked at the players about taking too long.

Rockets are now 8-5, tied for 4th with CMU and 2 games out of 3rd with 5 to play. Buffalo and NIU are only a game behind at 7-6. The top 6 make the tourney, and UT is seriously on the bubble because in the 5 games left, UT plays 2nd place OU twice and 1st place BSU once. UT needs to win a couple of those matches or they could end up on the outside looking in, which would be a terrible way to end the season.
