With the news that Mike Gambino left BC to take the Penn State HC job, many of us at NU have concerns about Mike Glavine leaving...

Daniel Gallen
@danieljtgallen
Penn State officially announced the hire of Mike Gambino as its new baseball coach. Gambino won 291 games in the past 13 years at Boston College & took the Eagles to two NCAA regionals + one super regional.

Peter Gammons
@pgammo
If Boston College can't get Mike Glavine--arguably the most respected coach in the Northeast--two suggestions have emerged:Brett Boretti of Columbia(6 Ivies) and Beverly(Danny Muphy's hometown) or Duke ass't Ty Blankmeyer, the ACC's hottest recruiter and son of St.John legend.

Big news in the local college baseball world. Gambino got a new contract at BC then left to join former BC athletic director Pat Kraft at Penn St. If Mike Glavine is willing to leave Northeastern, BC should go hard after him.

From D1 Baseball…

Boston College Hot Board: Coaching candidates to watch

COACHES CORNER Kendall Rogers - July 7, 2023

The Boston College job is one of the more challenging jobs in a Power Five conference, and BC athletic director Blake James is now tasked with finding a new head coach after Mike Gambino left the program earlier this week to be the new head man at Penn State.

Gambino’s departure culminates what has been a tumultuous past few weeks for the Eagles. First, assistant and hitting coach Tyler Holt left the program for some internal reasons earlier this summer and is now an assistant at North Florida. Then, pitching coach and recruiting coordinator Kevin Vance left the program to become the pitching coach at Arizona. Now, after Gambino inked a contract extension just a couple of weeks ago, he’s on his way out to join the Nittany Lions

Here are the facts about the BC job:

Yes, the Eagles have improved their standing in the ACC. They were picked to finish near the bottom of the ACC this past season and shattered expectations as a regional host contender. The Eagles now have a regional host worthy facility, which is a big deal. But where the Eagles meet the mark facilities wise, they fail to meet the mark in some other areas. For instance, sources told D1Baseball that the Eagles are expected to pay around or less than $300K for their next head coach, while the assistant salary pool is expected to be near the bottom of the ACC unless the Eagles change course from a commitment standpoint. Though one must give Penn State athletic director Pat Kraft for making it happen with Gambino, it’s still a hit to the gut for BC to lose a coach to a middle-to-bottom of the pack Big Ten Conference job.

Is BC a difficult job? Absolutely. Is it still an ACC job where you can be in the limelight? True, as well.

Let’s dive into some candidates to watch for the Boston College head coaching job.

Josh MacDonald, Connecticut

MacDonald, the 2022 D1Baseball Assistant of the Year, should be the top or one of the top options for the Eagles as their search for Mike Gambino’s replacement continues. The more important question is would MacDonald take the BC head coaching job? He was a finalist for the Penn State job, but the Nittany Lions are said to be making a much larger financial commitment to its program. BC would need to up the ante financially to hire MacDonald. With that said, he has been one of the premier pitching coaches, evaluators, and recruiters during his 12 seasons with Jim Penders and UConn. It’s not a matter of if for MacDonald — it’s when.

Mike Glavine, Northeastern

Few head coaches in college baseball deserve a Power Five job more than Glavine. The long-time Northeastern skipper has done an incredible job during his time with the Huskies. Not only has he cranked out some talented prospects, such as pitcher Aaron Civale, among others, he also has earned Colonial Athletic Association Coach of the Year honors in four seasons, while also guiding the Huskies to three NCAA Regional appearances and 40 or more wins in three seasons as well. Glavine is a terrific coach who is more than ready for a step up.

Scott Loiseau, Southern New Hampshire

Loiseau is another no-brainer candidate for the Eagles. Loiseau has built one of the nation’s premier DII programs while at Southern New Hampshire. He most recently guided the program to the College World Series, where they went 2-2 in the tourney with a loss to eventual national champion Angelo State. Loiseau has led the program to four CWS appearances, while also owning almost 500 wins as the head coach with a winning percentage nearing 70 percent. He’s a proven, big-time winner at the DII level. Can he work his magic at BC, too? Some would love to find out.

Kevin Vance, Arizona assistant/former BC assistant

Vance is a former UConn pitcher who also earned a master’s degree from Northeastern in Boston. Vance spent the past season as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator for the Eagles under Mike Gambino before heading to Arizona earlier this summer in the same role. Before that, Vance spent five seasons as the pitching coach and recruiting coordinator at Rhode Island. Vance is a talented, younger assistant and could fit the mold of hiring a rising coach without breaking the bank so to speak.

Steve Trimper, Stetson

Trimper has certainly enjoyed his stay in the Sunshine State, spending the last seven seasons with the Hatters. However, there are ties between Trimper and BC athletic director Blake James. James was the athletic director at Maine during a span of time that Trimper was the head baseball coach for the Black Bears. Trimper guided the Hatters to a Super Regional appearance back in 2018 with a 48-11 record, while also leading the program to a 35-win campaign this past season. During his time at Maine, Trimper led the Black Bears to a pair of NCAA tourney appearances, along with a 37-win campaign in 2013.

From the Boston Globe

Playing in the Cape League as a Mass. native is a special privilege for these Northeastern athletes

By Lauren Thomas Globe Correspondent,

HYANNIS — Dennis Colleran remembers attending his first Cape Cod Baseball League game when he was about 5 years old. Growing up, Colleran and his family made the trip down from their North Attleborough home to watch Cape League games countless times.

Now, his family makes that hour-and-a-half drive to watch Colleran play the teams he once idolized.

“I’ve wanted to be down here for a while,” Colleran, a pitcher for the Hyannis Harbor Hawks and Northeastern, said during pregame warmups at McKeon Park. “It’s pretty cool to finally get to play, and we have a great group of guys here. No matter winning or losing, it’s always a good time down here.”

Many baseball players growing up in Massachusetts, like Colleran, dream of becoming the next Aaron Judge (Brewster 2012) or Chris Sale (Y-D 2009) and taking their spots on the fields of the CCBL — often situated in their family vacation spots, and typically less than two hours from their hometowns.

This season, a number of Massachusetts natives — who also play for Northeastern — are slugging and striking their way around the Cape with a local flare that might just give them a leg up on the out-of-towners.

Colleran’s Northeastern teammate, Jake Gigliotti, is showcasing his skills with Cotuit. Gigliotti had not been to a Cape League game before playing in one, but he spent summers taking trips to the Cape and staying with friends.

“I think it’s a big local thing,” said Gigliotti, who grew up in Paxton and played at Wachusett Regional and the Winchendon School. “And I think that kind of adds to it. Everybody in the back of their mind wants to play in the Cape, you know, it’s not like someone’s like, ‘Oh, like I don’t really want to go.’ Everybody wants to play in the Cape.”

Being a local in the Cape League is somewhat of an oddity, given most players come from across the country. Having insider knowledge has turned the Northeastern crew into tour guides, chauffeurs, and teachers.

Danny Crossen grew up in Cotuit, a coastal town with a population of a little over 3,000. He’s enjoyed showing the newcomers around his hometown.

“It’s awesome. They’re kind of amazed by, like, what Cotuit is,” Crossen said. “It’s a lot different than what they’re used to and where they’re from. To hear what they come from, and then be able to kind of tell them what it’s been like growing up here, and kind of showing them around is unique, so it’s a lot of fun.”

Crossen, who just wrapped up his Northeastern career, returned home to be an assistant coach for the Kettleers this season. And he helped his college teammate Gigliotti get his big (Cape) break.

“I knew I was coming here to coach, and when I found out he didn’t have summer placement yet, I kind of reached out to them hoping that we had a spot,” Crossen said. “ … it worked out really well.”

Seeing Crossen as a coach has been fun for Gigliotti, who says Crossen still cheers like a player from the dugout, and it added an extra level of safety in the new environment.

“It made me feel more comfortable and made me adjust to this place a lot better and easier,” Gigliotti said.

Alex Lane also took advantage of his Northeastern teammates’ expertise. When he found out he’d be playing on the Cape, he talked to Cape League veterans Mike Sirota and Jordy Allard about what to expect.

“It makes it easier. You’re already with guys that you know,” said Lane, who is playing for Hyannis this summer. “But then you get down here and you meet guys from all over the country, like there’s guys from California, Texas, Florida. You become friends with them because you’re all kind of in the same boat.”

There are a few things that make the locals stand out, though. Having the ability to visit home whenever they want has drawn envy from their out-of-town teammates.

“I went home for a night over the all-star break and they were kind of like, ‘Wow, I couldn’t go home if I wanted to because I’m a plane ride away,’ ” Lane said.

When they want to avoid the bridge traffic, the Mass. natives spend time with their Northeastern teammates — going fishing, finding new places to eat, and catching up on the ballfield.

For Lane and Tyler MacGregor, the bond goes way back to St. John’s Prep, where they played together for three years. The childhood friends reunited at Northeastern last season as transfers.

“We hit at The Prep, like, a week before we went back to Northeastern,” MacGregor said. “We were both super excited to get back playing in the same jersey once again.”

Lane plays first base for Hyannis, and McGregor plays first for the Falmouth Commodores. The duo finds time to go fishing or grab dinner on off days.

“Baseball is a sport where your teammates are your brothers, and I mean, I’d say that for Alex, like one hundred percent,” MacGregor said.
