It would be awesome if they would turn the grass section near the convocation center into a hillside seating student section like they have at Virginia. That was my favorite stadium of all the ones we saw when we were doing Alex's visits:

I understand what you are saying, but the west stands really need to be done with a new press box. That is priority #1 at Rynearson.

I was told that moving the field is expensive. I had suggested that to an athletic department official.

We have the 'worst of all possible worlds' - remove the track and NEITHER the SAPC nor the hillside are close to the field. And we can't move the Gervin GA Center nor the SAPC.

The decision would have had to PRECEDE building of the SAPC.

Christian Spears had the best solution (I think it included winning the lottery) and rebuild and rename and do what we all want. It would have been done in two phases with the west stands torn down first and rebuilt closer to the field and then the following year tear down the east stands. The SAPC would have been closer to the north end zone.

If they moved the field south toward the Convo, they could take advantage of the space between the SAPC and the field by putting in a 50-yard half field running sideways from stand to stand that would serve as additional outdoor practice space.

May sound silly to some, but they could put up temporary seats in the north end zone and seat the band there. It wold close the other end of the horseshoe and fill the space from the end line and the SAPC.

Here is how Howard does it...

https://www.google.com/maps/place/Greene...77.0207861

One thing about Howard's stadium. It may be a glorified high school or JUCO stadium but it is 'right sized.' Attended two games last year there and fans filled all the sideline seats, end zone seats and some standing on the track in the NE corner. That is a great atmosphere. Better 100% of a small stadium than 25% of a bigger one.

Flexible stands like that would be nice, and I agree fully with your comment about filling the stands...any of us who run special events would much rather squeeze 100 people into a smaller space than have the same 100 in a space large enough for 200. It's the same people, but a much different feel.

Absolutely. The photo I found with Google Maps dates back to 2017. I think Caylin Newton was doing his magic at QB that year and they packed fans SRO in the corners of the end zones for their home coming game. (I watched it on TV; it was amazing).

Of course for our MBB fans from the mid-90s, this was Bowen on grass. Like the Wisconsin game which filled Bowen and was amazing.

Fans live for that type of experience. An adrenalin rush.

JUST IN TIME FOR THIS THREAD - Check out the 2nd half of the interview with Wetherbee from MAC Media Day yesterday (starting at about 8:30): https://static.emueagles.com/custompages...072622.mp3

Greg Steiner and Tom Helmer ask about several facilities updates, including a new outdoor track and second indoor practice facility. Scott mentions a new track where the current Westview Apartments are now (the Westview Apts. are staying but will be redesigned allowing for more room for athletics). He says this is a 5-10 year plan, based on fundraising.

It may take 5-10 years but getting the track out of Rynearson will be worth the wait!!

He also confirms that there has been a delay in getting the turf for the soccer and lacrosse field, but that is still coming.

RE: EMU Athletic Facilities
Great info, Frank. I found this information interesting given what I know and what I posted as I tried to think out of the box.

First, I knew EMU athletics was working on a West Campus facility plan. I was told that. That is Gospel. I obviously knew and posted about EMU's plans to re-do Westview Apts.. I think I posted that it could free up space for some ancillary purpose. I thought maybe parking. I didn't think specifically of a new track there.

NOW, we need to think in terms of PROCESS, with flow charts, of what happens first, second, third, etc.

First, EMU will demo and rebuild Westview into essentially an apartment complex. Will that be completed in 2025?
Theoretically, EMU could, finances available, consider a new track at an appropriate point after the new apartment complex is built (exterior). Say 2024.

I assume EMU could re-do the football field (field turf), but not the track awaiting a decision on moving the track.

As far as a 2nd IPF. A little recollection. What Christian Spears wanted was a big IPF where the SAPC is now. That would have gotten athletics completely out of Bowen. However, that would have entailed TWO big projects, a SAPC (northwest corner of Rynearson) and IPF (where the SAPC is). Too costly. Lucky we got the $ for the SAPC.

The SAPC was originally supposed to go in the N.W. corner of Rynearson but there were soil issues and the SAPC had to be redesigned and built as we see it.

I have NO idea where another IPF would go, where the $ would come from, etc. Spears had thought that the current IPF would be kept and rented out.

Agree. IF EMU (or one of us) wins the lottery, EMU could demo the west stands and rebuild them (and with a badly needed new press box) about 15 feet closer to the field, over where the track is now.

EMU does have a decision to make: They would like to have a new press box, but would they want to spend 15 - 20M on a new press box sitting on stands which were built in I believe 1964?

If not, could EMU find say 50M for new west stands, press box, etc.???

Wow. You discovered the treasure trove of information as to what EMU athletics would like to do!!! +3

Isn't great to talk about some REAL plans rather than what we may speculate!

Taking the view from 30,000 feet (maybe a low altitude flyover):

0). The design is modular. The entire site is divided into zones and planned within each zone. Each planned action appears to be independent of the others AFTER the new Westview Apts are completed in a few years.

1). It would over time, much time, move all EMU athletics over to West Campus. Most obvious is an indoor track which today is, of course, at Bowen.

2). It shows a proposed location for an OUTDOOR TRACK. 02-13-banana 03-cloud9 02-13-banana

3). Shows how student housing fits in the grand scheme.

4). It shows MODIFIED EAST STANDS for Rynearson.

5). It shows a lot of possible development for Olympic sports.

What I like is that this could be thought of as a say 25 year plan. It literally is ala carte where once Westview Apts are demolished and rebuilt a lot of new land is available for development.

EMU essentially 'traded' the old Westview Apts. for new apartments plus the land for an outdoor and indoor track. That is fricking HUGE!!!

This is a master stroke by EMU athletics and the university (the U is doing the student housing).

The U and EMU athletics are really getting it done. Wouldn't it be fun to be 21 and a student again. 02-13-banana

Lots of solid points. Would be nice to see some additional mixed use buildings in the "development opportunity" locations on the map in the link above. It would add a lot to the gameday atmosphere for all sports to have some bars/restaurants on the same block as the stadium with some off-campus student or young professional targeted apartments above.

If we're talking hypotheticals, I'd propose adding something like a "West Campus Student Union" by the intramural fields. Could have a basic fitness center, computer lab, and lounge areas with a couple meeting spaces for alumni events. I think it would help campus life and really boost the intramural program as it could serve as a hangout spot before/after IM games. Also, if they're spending all this money, this would be a convenient excuse to get the tour groups over to see it.

Dear Friends,
Rynearson was opened for the 1969 football season. So, I believe it didn't take more than two years to construct. That would mean 1967 as a beginning. The track was also there from the opening in 1969.
As many here know, only the West side was built with a one story press box. Seating capacity was put at 12,500.

If I won the mega million lottery, I would renovate Bowen for basketball, build a parking deck, convert the Convo to football indoor practice facility and also get rid of the track and replace it with a small bowl stadium with a capacity of 35000 with room for expansion…we would need it because an intimate environment breeds excitement and would grow fan base. Hope my sentence is long enough

Just curious. If anyone was roaming around West Campus, has work begun on demolishing the old Westview Apts?

I assume they were leased year to year and the leases may have expired already??? Say June 30?

The turf held up by shipping. The container had be full before shipped. It's in Virginia now could be here by Monday. Take 3 to 5 days to install. Bleachers and team dugouts need to be started. The first home game I'm told will be played at legacy field just off us23. 07-coffee3

They brought over some heavy equipment to west view today. They also put up some green tarps on the fence.
