As a War Between the States history buff, I remember that the Coonfederacy did try to expand to the west in the early days of its existence, but was stopped at the Battle of Glorietta Pass, if I'm not mistaken, which basically ended the South's hopes to go west just like Gettysburg ended the South's hopes of going north.
Let's say that the SEC decides to "go beyond Glorietta Pass" and convince some of the Pac 12 schools to join, like a few of the 4 corners PAC schools.
A combination of ACC and Pac 12 targets would allow the SEC to progress along two fronts: football & basketball, as well as add a new dimension to the equation: late night programming, something that shouldn't be dismissed, IMHO.
Since the SEC loves rivalries:
Georgia, Florida, Tennesee , Auburn, Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Texas, LSU, Texas A&M, Florida State, Clemson, South Carolina, North Carolina , Virginia Tech, Vandy, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Arizona, Arizona State, Louisville, NC State/Duke
definitely big, but definitely lots of rivalries. Not only is football very strong, but so is basketball!!
I enjoy watching the in-state/backyard rivalries. That’s important. Planting flags in new markets may appeal most to networks, but undervaluing close-by traditional rivalries would be disappointing. Games such as Texas vs aTm, Alabama vs Auburn, or even Georgia vs Georgia Tech, can receive good ratings nationwide depending on timing. A major challenge is that so many in-state, in some instances neighboring state, go up against each other on rivalry Saturday. How would, for example, the Clemson-South Carolina game be received if it was scheduled earlier in the season? Is such too anti-climatic?
Bedlum, Iowa State-Iowa, and a few others perhaps, are not season ending games. But the scheduling pattern for those games have long been ingrained.
With conference championship games, and playoff and bowl bids may be on the line, the last regular season opponent often matters highly.
You just need Thanksgiving, Black Friday, the last Saturday of November and perhaps Monday to spread them out.
Keep the Egg Bowl (Hail State vs Ole Piss) Thanksgiving night.
