NIU Athletics dropped this Youtube video a few weeks back on the 2012 season. Has Jimmy Ward, Tommylee, Lynch, and a few others in it. Good watch.

Great documentary.

I believe, as these kids are growing up under Hammock, that something like this will happen again(sooner than later).

People were passing out at Iowa. They were giving out free water.

I got tickets above NIU section in last row like week before. Thankfully we had some air and were standing. Hottest sporting event ever attended easily, more than FSU n Vandy and cub game in 90's where it was one of the hottest days ever, like 103. Was brutal heat index.

I was at that Cub game in 1995 when Chicago had the giant power outage in the afternoon, and a ton of people died from the heat that weekend. I believe this is the weekend you might be referencing.

That was pretty brutal it felt like I was melting into my seat and I was so sticky from sweat

I have a question for those of you who attend games in such extreme conditions. Whether it's 110 degrees or 15 degrees - or even thunderstorms - why do you do it? Is there a feeling of guilt if you do not attend? Is watching the game on TV in comfort something you just wouldn't do? What motivates you to sit outside in such conditions? Do you enjoy watching the game in such uncomfortable conditions that risk your health? Just curious.

They’re away games so you’ve made plans way in advance and booked things. It’s a game but also a vaca so you’ve been looking forward to it for awhile. It does create some obligation to attend. But I think you get a little fooled by the weather during tailgate. It’s not as bad then and You can find shade, move around. Then once you get in the stadium it’s way worse.

I would normally wear a pacho but I cannot since someone bought them all.

Seriously, though, interesting question. I am curious also about what the answer would be. I wonder if alot of the answers are a personal test of what their body can withstand.

What gets overlooked is while the student athletes have to play in unbelievable field temperatures and climates with no pay while schools officials, TV execs, Conference execs, and NCAA execs make money while watching the game from a climate controlled room.

This is a really interesting question.... I think for me is my enjoyment of Huskie football is at its highest watching it live. The shared experience with other Huskie fans is just such a blast live. While I am not young, I still can handle the extremes pretty well, my attitude might change as I age, probably will.

I sat on the UNLV side that day to avoid the direct sun light. I think it was around 110 at kickoff. I can remember watching that shade line slowly working its way back. I think by the second half the Huskies were out of the direct sun light. Brutal. Yes, I witnessed some people passing out at that game (Huskie fans).

I guess I value my health, well-being, and comfort too much. There is absolutely nothing that would make me sit outside for several hours in such brutal, dangerous conditions (be it searing heat or bone-chilling cold) that could cause serious illness (let alone the extreme discomfort). To watch a football game?????? I guess I should just count my blessings that I have a TV to watch those games.

At one of our home games, I talked to an older man who went to that Iowa game. He told me that he passed out and was rushed via ambulance to the hospital. Why?? Did he do it just so he could brag that he lives on the edge and almost died?

Yes. I made the Vanderbilt game and it warm, extra warm but doable. We drank more water than beer and took a break at half time and washed off in sink. Stuff like that.

I saw UNLV game and just assumed everyone in stands melted away.

In my mind the true fan champs are the ones who made Wyoming game. 3 hr Tstorm delay. Triple OT game being played at 3 or 4am. I can't remember time cause I was in and of sleep on my couch.

Why do we do it? Because we can. Sometimes in life, the struggle is the story.

(GT was warm that day and we were thrilled the game was played at sunset.)

I really love going to live football games. I guess that's it in a nutshell. I've never really gone to a game where I felt I was at risk but a few times I have been a little uncomfortable. I'm now in my early 60s and I still feel that way. I have a buddy who attends games with me and is my age. We've discussed that one day we won't be able to sit in the stands when the weather gets really cold at Huskie Stadium, but for now, I dress for the weather and enjoy the games live while I am able. Also, I will admit I don't mind sitting inside at Ford Field during the first week of December when the Huskies are playing there. 02-13-banana

Enjoy reading the dedication of NIU fans on here. I try to make it back to Illinois for one game a year when the weather is nice. I've been on travel for work in Ohio and have had my NIU lanyard/facemask on and everyone out here is very familiar with NIU and our success. They are also pretty familiar with the MAC and it's other teams.

Warmest game I've been to was the game at Iowa. Rather hot. Some people apparently passed out, though I was generally fine.

Coldest was the late-season WMU game. I'm still shaking from that game.

First and foremost I love watching live football, more so than any other sport. The excitement in the stands can be electric. I also just love being outside...regardless of the weather....If you dress and hydrate properly the weather is easily overcome. Its also a time to hangout with friends, sit around and BS at the tailgate and after the game.

Additionally, I have had the same 4 seats since the Seat Backs were installed( mid 90's). I have sat next to the same people since that time...we have become friends, I look forward to seeing them at the games. Same with our tailgating spot...so it becomes a social thing as well.

I don't recall what year it was. I am guessing sometime in the very late 80s to early 90s. There was a game at Huskie Stadium where it was so cold. (how cold was it?) The hot chocolate would freeze when you tried to pour it out of the thermos. I seem to recall almost everyone left at half time and even the band didn't play during the game.

I only remember it being so cold, because my dad, who would watch every game until the end no matter what, said in the beginning of the 4th quarter that maybe we should go home.

It was that cold.

As far as the UNLV game, the visitors side was out in the sun, no shade and it was well over 105 that game on metal bleachers. Half the crowd on that side of the stadium was trying to cool off in the internal part of the stadium in the shade. Finally, they had everyone who wanted to move to the home side (in the shade) if you wanted to. That heat was brutal. (The Hushies did win that game)

Little did I know, that years later, I would end up living in Reno. Thankfully, it doesn't get that hot here. We just had a week or so of 100+, but nothing like Vegas's 120+. No thanks!

RE: Hustlebelt Non-Conference Article FOOTBALL
Haven't had this much fun reading the Pound in a while. Thanks for getting the ball rolling Dog Fan. Like so many of you, it boils down to the fact that I just won't miss attending an NIU home game in person if I can help it no matter what. I've sat through rain, storms, snow, cold, and by myself when none of my fellow season ticket holders will join me. Like one guy said on here, our season tickets are by some great people who we've gotten to know and enjoy, so there are always a few brave souls around to join in bitching about the weather. I prefer the cold to the heat any day. Was in row 2 behind the NIU bench at Iowa and that was brutal, but three of us from our group never left our seats except at halftime for a couple bottles of water. I think I sweated off 5 pounds. Was at the Wyoming game--absolute blast. Sat in the middle of the Wyoming crowd with some of the nicest people (hate sitting where they stick the visiting team's fan base--what a crappy view of the game!). Was at that WMU game referenced by someone on here and agree that might have been the coldest. I think that was when Lynch set the all-time single-game rushing record for QBs. Hell, if he could accomplish that in such terrible conditions, I could sit in it. Weather games are kind of a badge of courage for me. A fun challenge. Besides, I always re-watch the game from my favorite chair in the comfort of my home later on anyway. Can't wait for the season to start--bad weather and all! Go Huskies!
