Came across this and wondered what exactly the source was, but it makes a lot of sense in conjunction with what's already been discussed in various circles.
Anyway, here's a thought...
Rather than the ACC dissolving, what if they let go of a few key members like this while simultaneously adding some others and getting a better contract to go along with their long term GOR? Would that be amenable to the ACC schools that would otherwise be left out?
It might make sense when it comes down to it. If the ACC isn't totally splitting up then its ESPN contract can still be played for certain advantages.
Let these 4 go...Florida State, Clemson, North Carolina, and Virginia
And then make room for large additions from the middle of the country? Instead of ESPN trying to sign the Big 12, what about just absorbing part of it into the existing ACC contract?
I tracked this down for you. It's a tweet based on a Bret McMurphy piece in which he said the SEC was looking at candidates. He specifically said North Carolina, Virginia, Clemson and Florida State. He said there were others and didn't name them.
The SEC does not initiate moves. So, each of these has likely called. If these 4 are unattached it's a very strong 4. Two AAU state flagships with a combined market of 21 million. The best second school in Florida, and the hottest football program in the ACC. Clear those to 20 and you can be much more picky getting to 24 if you needed or wanted to do so.
If that scenario happened with those four. There are plausible replacements that could: WVU, Cincinnati, UCF, and USF; that’s 4 respectable additions that fit the ACC’s footprint. Iowa State would be a good pick.
Tulane, Memphis, TCU, SMU, KSU, maybe Rice, could work. Baylor wins.
Kansas? Some may end-up joining PAC remnants.
Oklahoma State is an undervalued power. They could dominate.
TTU? How far west would they go?
There is always Temple, ECU, UConn, Navy/Army options.
East Division 10:
BC, ‘Cuse, VPI, NCSU, WFU, Duke, GT, Miami, UCF, USF
West Division 10:
Pitt, WVU, ISU, Louisville, Cincinnati, Memphis, TCU, SMU, Tulane, Rice
Houston, Baylor, TTU, Okla. State, Kansas, KSU— join with PAC schools not going to the BIG.
OK, I will stop with the semi-fantasy.
