Back then there wasn't much to recommend it. Since I've been gone the place has exploded population wise. Down side to that is traffic. Up side is that the old down town area has morphed into something of a night life/food scene. Much needed in the dry county. Getting a glass of wine with your steak or a beer with a pizza is no problem anymore since almost all the better places have a "private club" license.

The campus itself has seen major renovations and changes for the better. The football stadium/facilities are the crown jewel of the campus but I like the clock tower and the new tradition of lighting it with different colors for special occasions. Now if they could just do something about those raccoons who keep getting in the library...

*pictures the raccoons trying to learn stuff*...the only problem MU has is the killer squirrels that come outta nowhere. I was coming back one morning after taking care of some friends enjoying the late night and had one pop up outta one of the trashcans...

Not for sports, ok. Are you married? Bc the local talent is tops. Pretty girls everywhere you look.
Great food.
90 minutes away from Gulf Coast (casinos will be happy to take your money) or New Orleans, so easy double up.

Happily married almost 16 years. But I can dig a town with great food..

We’re not necessarily a “college town” but we’re a town built around two colleges.

Food (to get you started - anything Robert St. John, Hattiesburgers and Blues, Blue Jazz, Southbound Bagels, Keg and Barrel, The Porter Pub, Rose’s BBQ, Sully’s for dry aged steaks)

Drinks (Southern Prohibition Brewery, Mahogany Bar, Collodium Brewery, 4th Street Bar and Grill for your sportsbar needs)

Things to do/History (Mississippi Armed Forces Museum, African American Military Museum, Hattiesburg Zoo, Longleaf Trace, Pocket Museum, The Lucky Rabbit)

In the area (Paul B Johnson State Park, Red Bluff aka Mississippi’s Grand Canyon, Desoto National Forest, Lauren Rogers Museum of Art, things from the HGTV show “Hometown”)

Why We’re the “Hub City” (An hour and a half from the MS Gulf Coast, Jackson, New Orleans and Mobile)

I mean does anyone “from Jackson” really live in Jackson? Florence is close enough.

Ha!!! We’ve been know as the “Hub City” for many years now. There is a Hub City Ford dealership, a Hub City diner (excellent grub, btw), etc.

I did a little research and there seems to be a bunch of places with that same nickname. Lafayette, of course, is the best of all of them.

Hub City

Alright alright, I changed it. (Though it did take me an hour and fifteen to get to Millsaps from USM last year)

I loathe driving in Jax.

I lived in Ridgeland and would dread if I couldn't get around the stack to get anywhere.. I would drive 30 extra minutes to avoid it if I could.

All but Atlanta GA, been there so many times, doesn't mean I won't go watch Marshall play there just won't been new like so many of the other towns. Atlanta GA is great except for the traffic. 04-cheers

Huntington is a college town. That’s it’s charm. If you visit Huntington for a game this fall set aside a few days for a side trip, especially if you’re an outdoor enthusiast.

In the early fall you need to check out the New River Gorge National Park. September and October brings Gauley Season and world class white water rafting to the gorge. Bridge Day is also the third Saturday in October every year. You can walk across the New River Gorge Bridge or parachute off of it for that matter.

Leaf-peeping in September and October is another unique trip. If you are fortunate enough to be able to reserve a seat you can take train rides into the mountains to check out all the fall foliage.

Snowshoe and the other ski resorts start making snow in early November with the resorts usually opening around Thanksgiving.

This... and Huntington is a culinary mecca. There are so many restaurants downtown (only two national chain non-fast food restaurants among... I'd say at least 30 or more... being Red Lobster and Applebee's). So if you love good food... Huntington is your town.

San Marcos is tops because that area of Texas is basically a yearly trip already regardless if UL is playing there. Highly recommended for all those who have it on their list.

For the places I haven’t been to: Boone.

Which towns/cities in the Sun Belt would you most want to visit NOT FOR SPORTS?

*Caveat: You can't count your own school's town.*

- I think the one I am most curious about is San Marcos. It just sounds like a quintessential college town deep in the heart of Texas. I'd love to see what is there.

- A very close second is Lafayette. My parents went there just a couple of months ago and said the food was amazing. I would love to see it... probably in early spring or late fall, lol. Humidity and heat, I'm not a fan of them.

- Continuing eastward, Mobile would be interesting. I love cities on the water, and I love history. Mobile's old and on a bay. Good fit for Michael.

- Statesboro would be good, but only if I get a night in Savannah out of it.

- Norfolk, I would love to see that area, especially the Virginia Beach boardwalk.

I've been to Atlanta, Conway, Harrisonburg, and Boone (of course).

ULM, stAte, USM, Troy, and Marshall people, sell me on making a visit to your place.

Visiting Huntington you get your normal small city entertainment... restaurants, live music, etc. But what's really fun is the State parks, Trout Fishing (Cranberry River - some of the best fishing in the East Coast), Hiking / biking / skiing (Showshoe Resort is amazing no matter what time of year it is), The New River Gorge is a must see. The Hatfield and McCoy Trail. I'm sure I've forgotten some stuff, some other Herd Brothers can add to this. I mean we only have 1.7 million people in WV so there's a lot of stuff to do outdoors because we have a lot of woods to explore LOL!

Wow! I had no idea WV was that sparsely populated. We have 1.5 million in the Norfolk/VB region alone.

We're very selective on who we allow to stay LOL

I have an inside joke with a coworker centered around Hattiesburg. We were there working with a client and when we left for lunch they warned us about how bad the "Hattiesburg traffic" is. We went to Cotton Blue for lunch and had no traffic problems whatsoever and have laughed about it ever since. Any time a discussion comes up about traffic we always say "this Hattiesburg traffic."

Driving in Memphis is fast becoming hell. Traffic jams are common in the morning and afternoon commutes, and anytime after 9pm the Racers come out and you have to constantly look for the guys driving 100 in a residential neighborhood.
