The top one is definitely too expensive. Probably both are. What do you have in paper fans?

I may have to run by a gas station that day and watch out of curiosity.

Someone’s mad SHSU embarrassed JMU the last time they played.

If no one was there to see it, did it really happen?

Also, I get that they have quite a history and a large state to draw fans from, but is anyone else surprised to see Syracuse so high on this list? Has a definite "not like the others" feel.

Losing 35-38 in a pretty meaningless spring season that should've just been cancelled isn't "getting embarrassed". THIS, especially after SHSU threw a fit about not being the 1 seed, is getting embarrassed.

I have a cousin in law who is from mid state NY and a huge Syracuse fan, I asked him the same question. Syracuse is the only power 5 football program in 1 of the largest populated states in the US. Unlike Texas & Cali who battle for fans in state, Cuse doesn't have that issue. So since there is no in state competition from other P5 schools, most everyone growing up in NY pulls for the Orange.

Agree, the footnotes about data sources make me question the precision of these estimates, and the methodology. Not a lot is shown about how these calculations were performed.

They are citing 2014 Vivid seats ticket sales (StubHub would seem better for many schools), 2020 Census data (marketz?), and then inputs "averaged" to "avoid penalizing" schools not included in some of the studies (G3).

Things like attendance (ideally butts in seats, not paid), and TV ratings tell a much better story in my opinion.

I would propose TV ratings and licensed merchandise sales to be the two biggest indicators of fan size followed by ticket sales, booster club membership (head count, not $$$), and social media engagement - in that order. Census data is useless for a study like this.

You got it half-right. JMU wasn’t embarrassed by SHSU, but JMU was embarrassed to lose to SHSU. 07-coffee3

Yes, however, if you only have one paper fan, and they’re the kind that oscillates, can SHSU generate any breeze?

RE: Fanbase size per NYT
The marketing approach further down the pages is interesting, especially for non-P5 schools. Hopefully, we all have good community support. Not sure about the level of LSU/Alabama support in Lafayette and Mobile, but I imagine higher overall incomes and corporate support are advantages over the smaller market schools. GaSt has a mostly insurmountable obstacle filling their stadium. They have the public and corporate money to be competitive on the field, but half the people in Atlanta are watching their team from their home state and the others are watching UGA with a few Tech fans mixed in. Coastal is also in close proximity to retired transplants. Games I attended before McCall didn't really have a rabid fan base. Maybe the recent success will keep some fans when McCall is gone. App experienced a huge boost in attendance and donors after their FCS NC in 2005 and the Michigan win in 2007. They enjoy great support in their region. Hattiesburg, Huntington, Troy, and Statesboro enjoy great community support and are limited by the low median incomes and smaller population. Harrisonburg enjoys both community support and financial means. I'm less sure about Jonesboro and San Marcos communities but I know both struggle with the P5 issue and other G5's and FCS in the case of Tx St. ULM is one of the poorest schools in the nation.

Cultivating butts-in-seats ticket holders and donors is a greater challenge for some than others and it must be a major priority for AD's hoping to earn that P5 job. Getting people within our radius to attend our games instead of watching TV while wearing their P5 jersey is a tedious process.
