Cool Basketball Rivals
Apparently VCU is cancelling their basketball series with ODU. 97 games and some electric contests at the CAA tourney. I guess that’s progress.

RE: Basketball Rivals
They said the Sun Belt teams are generally low rated (moreso than Conference USA), so ODU's rating would naturally fall as well. So, to "protect their program" they were ending the very profitable series.

Sounds like total BS...

Will probably drop Fordham and La Salle next.

Hard to blame VCU honestly. ODU killed their basketball program in their pursuit of football.

RE: Basketball Rivals
Rumor is that this applies to Richmond and GMU as well (after GMU plays out its contract with ODU this year). An A-10 basketball scheduling philosophy issue. I hope ODU decides to stop playing them in all sports and I wish we would do so as well (obviously except for football because we have to play UR). Why ODU or us would want to play VCU or Richmond in any sports given how we've been treated in basketball is beyond me. Spare me the history of W&M and Richmond. All of that is long since past and if it were up to me, I would have kicked Richmond out of CAA football a long time ago.

Basketball Rivals
It's a marriage of convenience. College budgets are super tight. Richmond is a peer school that plays most of the sports that we offer and are a short bus ride away. We share similar alumni demographics. Other than the hurt feelings that accompany it, playing Richmond in all sports yearly makes too much sense from an administration standpoint. Like them or not for how far they've tried to distance themselves from us, they are our most historic rival. UR and W&M have completely different athletic depts from when the split happened. Any attempts to rekindle that rivalry, IMO, is a good thing.

I am not referring to their walking away from the CAA. Richmond continues to refuse to play at Kaplan, a long standing decision embraced by their current athletic department. We'll be just fine not playing them at all, in anything. They have the same cash challenges we have if not more. Make their basketball decisions expensive for all their sports. I am not suggesting they owe us a game every year at alternating locations. But no games at Kaplan since 2013?

UR has also dropped ODU from their basketball schedule, although, unlike VCU, they do say they will look to bring them back in a couple years or so. VCU...that sounds like some bad blood mixed in. I'm sure VCU fans are not overjoyed with the change. That was a big rivalry game.
