Quote:According to a source, some of the natural rivalries that the Big 12 plans to prioritize in an effort to ensure multiple matchups during the regular season in 23-24 and 24-25 are Kansas-Kansas State, Oklahoma-Oklahoma State, Texas-Texas Tech, Baylor-TCU, and West Virginia-Cincinnati. The league is also considering Iowa State-BYU and Houston-UCF as matchups that will occur twice a season during this two-year window where there are 14 teams in the conference.

It’s a future basketball scheduling article but I think the Natural Rivalry part is the most interesting. These could be valid for football rivalries in 2023 and 2024.

Kansas-Kansas State
Oklahoma-Oklahoma State
Texas-Texas Tech
Baylor-TCU
West Virginia-Cincinnati
Iowa State-BYU
Houston-UCF

(Post Texas/OU I would assume Oklahoma State-Texas Tech)

Sounds like Cyclones-Knights and Cougars-Cougars is still a possibility.

I think before all is square away it will be someone from the state of Texas matching up with Houston, imo.

Is it really a surprise the other Texas programs avoided Houston as their primary rival…

Nothing to do with avoiding Houston. 5 teams in Texas with Tech and UT having a coaching thing right now after UT hired Tech's coach. TCU-Baylor are some of the longest rivalry games in the nation. UH is odd one out for now.

Houston will likely be paired with Tech once Texas and Oklahoma leave is my guess.

Agreed, this is definitely the way to go in basketball. Those games will be fire.

KU-KSU-ISU
BYU-TCU-BU
UH-TTU-OKST
UC-UCF-WVU

The 4 groups of three teams match up well. Can be good for a football schedule and basketball breakdown for which teams to play twice a year.

I think for football my current preference is a sort of Pod+1. The above groups play one another and then there is one permanent rival on top of that. If that's UCF for us, I'm totally cool with that.

In basketball that makes for 14 games, and you can have the remaining four alternate to home-and-home every other year.

I really don’t have a preference who Houston is paired with… Heck if I was forced to pick I wouldn’t mind selecting BYU blue cougars football, basketball and call it a day.

The problem is they are such an outlier---whoever UCF is matched with will be a head scratcher. In the end, once UT and OU leave, I suspect Houston will be matched with someone more appropriate for a permanent "rival"---that said---at least there are some similarities in the two schools. They both share CUSA/AAC history and represent large public schools in large southern cities that had success in the AAC. In the first few years of the AAC I actually felt like a bit of rivalry was starting to develop as UCF and Houston shared some close games that were important in the standings early in the new leagues history. That nascent rivalry seemed to lose momentum when we didnt play each other for a year or two and an improving Memphis began to rise up to become a key annual game in the western division.

Reviving this topic because I can’t get enough Big 12 talk…

Does anyone think the potential of creating voting blocs could somehow affect the process of choosing protected rivalries (mainly in football)? Could a failure to fully integrate the newbies result in an AAC bloc? Does WV chummy up with UC and UCF to create an eastern bloc? Do the 3 remaining Texas schools choose to freeze out UH or create a 4 school Texas bloc? Does Oklahoma State have a greater incentive to align with a Texas bloc or form a Big 8 bloc with ISU, KU, and KSU? Where would BYU fit in all of this? If the powers that be have trouble with this process does that incentivize certain schools to advocate for further expansion?

Maybe I've got rose-colored glasses, but I think the New Big XII knows they have a perception issue to overcome and they will do what makes the most sense to make the league strong in the eyes of college football fans and TV viewers. There's no guarantee the Big 10 is coming for anyone, so while you don't ignore your own interests, you do what is the best for the group as a whole. When things are settled and they know their place in college football, that could change. But I truly think everyone is interested in helping the New Big XII be as successful as possible right now.

In addition to the fact that it's very much not what I want as a Houston fan, I think a BE/AAC bloc would be very bad for creating a unified conference with integrated membership. It would be a bad omen for the conference.

I do expect there to be some "cliques", but so far they have said and done a lot to lead me to believe everybody knows how important this is. A lot of fans on message boards are always "Well [such-and-such schools] will just have to accept [thing that we want]" whether it's putting Texas schools together or splitting them up or games in Texas or Florida.

I'm hoping that everybody at the table realizes that there is some degree of inevitability in that, you want as little of that as possible.

don't laugh too hard. when UCF gets to the Big 12 we'll do so well teams will be trying to create new rivalries with us like what happened with UConn after we moved the Big East/AAC and only lost 1 league game (to UConn) in our first 2 seasons. Civil ConFLiCT baby.

This shows that UCF does not really have a natural rival in the new B12. It will have to develop.

BYU is holding their independent football media day today and their AD said the Big XII will play 9 conference games. So that's confirmed.

I hope that continues after UT & OU leave as it'll mean that we'll only have 2 teams not on the schedule in any given year.
