softball world series
Good series for the Big 12.

Oklahoma won an elimination game against UCLA 15-0 to head into the finals. They will play either Texas or Oklahoma St. who meet in an elimination game tonight after Texas won 5-0 earlier today.

Was the Oklahoma game called early due to a mercy rule?

Yes. OU led 15-0 after 5 innings, and the game was called.

UCLA forced that game by beating OU earlier in the day, 7-3. It was only OU's third loss of the year. The other two losses were to OSU and Texas, now playing in the other semifinal.

OU is currently 57-3. 40 of the 57 wins are by mercy rule.

Texas beat Oklahoma St. twice today, 5-0 and then 6-5 tonight. They will play Oklahoma for the title.

My Razorbacks were so close to knocking Texas, but couldn't get the timely hit after winning game one.

Geez, that's going to be a hot ticket.

In Oklahoma City too.

It was about to be a hotter ticket until OSU blew the 5-0 lead in the second game.

OU has a pretty amazing team. Only 3 losses all season and all to other members of the final 4-Texas, Oklahoma St and UCLA.

Despite the domination, I still find softball to be more fun to watch than baseball.

OU finished with a record of 59-3, with 40 wins by run rule. There is no run rule in the championship series, and game 1 was won by a score of 16-1.

Simply incredible.

It's a vastly superior television product. Baseball has a real pace of play problem IMO

I went to some Kennesaw St. baseball games this year. The pitchers didn't fool around like they do in the pros. It went pretty quick (except that the game with Georgia had about 20 walks/HBPs).

Yes, the women's softball game is fast-paced, whereas college baseball - like all baseball I'm familiar with, LOL - is much slower paced, too slow for me.

Baseball is the best game I have ever played, and I played Soccer, Football, Hockey, Basketball, Tennis and Golf. Baseball tests your vision, sense of sound, physical ability and is the only physical game which fully tested your mental ability as you have to think through each permutation of what must be done if the ball is hit your way, or which sequence of pitch is likely to be next and where it is you need to hit the ball, which affects stance, elevation of swing, and angle of swing and even the speed of the swing. It may be slow paced but that's because it requires thought. So, it is the most fully engaging of mind and body of any of the games I've played.

Unfortunately, unless you have played, it is likely the least engaging to watch and the only thing it stimulates is a nap if you are at home, and hemorrhoids if you are in bleacher seats at the game.

I always loved it because there was no clock and each side had exactly the same number of chances. Sadly, in a less pastoral era, and in a sped-up society of multi-taskers, there remain few who understand it, have played it, and who know the joy of it.

Baseball requires thought, but that was true 50 years ago as well, when the pace of play was much faster. Now, pitchers take forever between pitches because the camera is on them, and batters stall at the plate so they can adjust equipment that didn't exist 50 years ago. There is way too much preening and posturing going on.

Minor leagues have experimented with a pitch clock that has sped up the game considerably. Now if we could put a clock on batters to be ready to hit faster that would help even more.

But a big reason for shorter softball games is that they are only seven innings instead of nine. That isn't a pace of play issue, but it does require less of a time commitment for viewers.

All of the strap on body armor needs to go. Do that and they would move out of the way of an inside fastball. As to adjusting cups, well if it's out of place I promise you that you'll be thinking about it! College ball has a pitch clock now, but the rule is asinine because if the pitcher waves the ball hand at a base it starts over. At the plate once you stepped into the box you had to ask permission to step away. That's been gone for decades. We have a delay now when a batter reaches base. He trades his body armor off for oven mitts so he can slide headfirst if need be. Baseball players now look like half-dressed football players when they stand at the plate. When you wear a 95 mph fastball you think twice about leaning over the plate. It's why I have zero problem with umps that give the pitcher 3 inches off the outside corner.
