I Expect Better Basketball Operations for 2024-25 Season
I thought long and hard on whether or not to write this but since I know our athletic administration reviews this forum, I wanted to make sure it grabbed their attention! This has been on my mind for awhile.

So who is in charge of the season schedule and even game time operations? Is this the basketball operations position that is under Stan Heath? I imagine that person collaborates with personnel from the athletic administration to set up what happens on game day from concessions, to scheduling and coordinating the arrival of the opponent to the GA center, halftime entertainment etc

So here are some issues I have with our Basketball Operations:

1) It was embarrassing to schedule Ben Braun day during a holiday break with no students, no pep band and a lesser opponent not worthy of garnering interest from fans to attend. I mean we have perhaps one of the great MAC coaches of all time and the whole event was underwhelming to say the least. Very poor planning! I mean I know that we have to accommodate Braun’s schedule but if he couldn’t come during a MAC game with students and pep band then postpone the event until it is meaningful!

2) During EMU winter break and Spring break, can we get a high school PEP band to the game - I mean this is minimum to help with a game time atmosphere!

Our whole EMU basketball experience seems Off from a fans perspective. Yes ultimately winning will bring fans to the GA but regardless the basketball operations has to be improved! This is low hanging fruit!

Now with that said, the GGA is the top facility in this conference. We have new dorms under construction that should be open this fall so students can walk out their back door and be close to the GGA. Now if Stan can put together an exciting team next season with students, and PEP band the GGA could start rocking!!!

I thought they would upgrade concessions and halftime entertainment when Emoni was here but we got metal detectors instead. Under Murphy there was actual family centered live entertainment like trained dog shows etc. I went to one game last year. One concession stand open and Little Caesars. The merch store was closed long ago. It's like here's a basketball game not any type of experience. Student attendance has gone downhill since Murphy left.

This a very good post or thread, Luckeyone. I adamantly second your observations and suggestions. Hope these things can improve.

So has the lack of wins! Murphy got us at least to Cleveland majority of his years! Heath is 0-3 to be the 8th seed! Heath is 32-65 in 3 seasons, and the students don't appear to have any interest in going! Let's hope year 4, we can at least compete in the MAC! We should've 4 returning starters as well! Great post Luckeyone! Well thought out, and great points.

I recall you suggesting that we capitalize on the Emoni crowd bump and EMU did not. Nailed that one '79.

Yes, I should have included Emoni Bates marketing as a big time flop by basketball operations as well. Regardless of whether or not you enjoyed Emoni at EMU, there was absolutely ZERO marketing, T-Shirts sold with his NIL, advertisement that Emoni was at EMU etc. I mean we could have printed out 10,000 T-shirts for $20 and gave Emoni $5 and EMU $5 to set the what EMU can do for NIL wheel in motion but we got Natta, Zip, Nothing!

The operations are run like a JV basketball game. I’m expecting much more professionalism from EMU next season to match the beautiful GGA that we have!!!

This past season, I attended the least amount of games over the last 30 years. Regardless of winning, I’m looking at Scott Werherbe to improve this experience 10 fold - because it was JV basketball like this past season!!!

Thanks Jerry! You know basketball is my passion and I don’t ever want to attend a game again where there’s no pep band. There are plenty of high school bands that would love to play when our own band is on break.

Also our basketball operations person should be campaigning that we get no home games during winter or spring break. I’m sure the MAC could hear this grievance and easily remedy it factoring the MAC schedule with each schools winter and spring breaks. This is not hard just takes a little effort!!!

Could the MAC schedule around winter and spring breaks for 12 schools???

How many MAC schools are not in session the first week of January???

Most schools have different spring breaks. Our schedule coordinator, along with the rest of his counterparts, could easily work with the MAC and find a way that only a maximum of one game is played at home during this time. Again this is middle school logic and just take a little effort to coordinate schedules with the MAC schools.

I did not look at spring break BUT looked at 5 nearby MAC schools, EMU, CMU, WMU, TOL, BGSU. All started spring semester JANUARY 8.

That means say 10 - 14 days of OOC and 1 week of conference games are during dead periods (e.g. Dec 18 to Jan 8).

We need to remember it is college and not NBA. Academic schedules are not designed around athletics.

Cow, I would love nothing more! Ben Braun got us an awesome building and we have plenty of parking, The Gervin is an untapped gem.

Wetherbee has done a stellar job attracting facility donations. Time to find someone who understands the "entertainment" experience to work for him.

Wetherbee and marketing are who you need to reach out to. Wetherbee is responsible for the scheduling of opponents and marketing are the ones doing all the gameday events. Basketball Operations under Heath is just responsible from getting the EMU team from point A to B.
