Yea the issue there is where do you even put it? Unfortunately those eat up a ton of land so unless we can figure out a way to use the building for other things as well I think it'll be tough to get that going.

Coastal got it's indoor practice facility approved. Is this something we are going to need in the near future to be competitive in the conference?

Where could it even go? Is there room around the old field house somewhere? Over by Powhatan? Maybe by the golf course or the high school stadium? With Norfolk Southern pulling out of town and coal usage dwindling in the future, maybe we can get some property from NS?

Practicality purposes it would need to be near the existing practice field and LR hill sports complex with the recently/ on going locker renovations.

I might be wrong, but in my thoughts a IPF would represent a lesser value than some of the other investments ODU could make at this time. I'm not sure if it is something which is logistically necessary, or if it would represent that much of an added recruiting tool.

I suppose if it could be done cost effectively, such as by using an inflatable structure, and not having to buy costly land, it could be done sooner than I think. If it would be expensive, I think they need to focus on more revenue generating options, such as the NEZ.

I agree. The limited available land probably bumps it down the priority list anyways.

If we had a pot of money waiting to be spent, I can see the need, but indoor practice facility is so far down the priority list, I don't see it happening any time soon.

Coastal did not get it approved. They got phase 1 of the process approved. This is just the design phase. They still need to fundraise and given we have seen similar announcements and pretty renderings from WKU and MTSU and no actual shovels in the ground, it’s possible this never happens.

RE: Facilities Discussion
Years ago, when my company was building Powhatan Stadium and the golf course club house (along with the large parking lot across from L.R. Hill, which wasn't there at the time), ODU was discussing relocating the Facilities building. I believe this is still the plan. This scenario would free-up the former Facilities building space for a parking lot or garage and allow the practice facility to go in the surface parking lot across from L.R. Hill.

The only issue I remember, when we were building all of the above along with the Soccer building is that there are several large high-pressure sewer lines underground that go back to HRSD. This is not a deal breaker, but it does make construction very sensitive in a portion of that area.

Build a garage where the parking lot is and put the IPF on top. Problem solved.

Your welcome.

That's easy, you would just cover one of the current practice fields with the IPF. Then you just have one indoor field and a 3/4 field outside. No need to buy new land.

You could also convert Powhatan Field into a field hockey/lacrosse field and put the IPF where that sits right now.

In 2018 ODU extended the City of Norfolk's lease on Powhatan Field through 2038. Granby HS and Maury HS will continue to use the field for football for at least that long. In 2038 the field will become the property of ODU.

It’s already ODU property. But that’s likely around the time when we will be ready to invest in an IPF. Lot of needs right now that come before an IPF.

Correct, I should have said that ODU will gain full control of the facility in 2038. Agree about the more pressing needs

Does anybody have any pics or know of status of LR Hill reno? A non-ODU coworker showed me an unflattering Instagram video making the rounds showing the team working out of cardboard boxes and folding chairs for their lockers in an open room. Kind of reminded me of Revenge of the Nerds when they moved into the gym (that's a movie for those under 40). I had to explain to him that the locker rooms are being renovated, but that's out there.

Your Coworker might be talking about the post from Tyran Hunt(OL transfer from UMD) that ended up spawning this thread on the conf board.

Any insight into how the team is handling the delay? Is it a distraction? Causing anger? Or a minor set back to be laughed at? Any word on when it should be completed at this point? Wonder if ODU can get some money back for their failure to deliver on the deadline?

I have no idea to be honest. I would assume it made them laugh when they first saw it and now they might not even be bothered by it or might be causing a little inconvenience. As per the project manager for AllCon I have no idea how he/she are gonna put a positive spin on this to their execs or to ODU Admin. Someone in the know about all the contract details would probably know more about the monetary damages incurred in failing to meet the deadlines etc.

They are handling it just fine. In the comments of that tik tok from Tyran, a bunch of guys on the team said things (including Tyran) that made it clear they see the light at the end of the tunnel.

Tear down the facilities building and take some of the Mid-Rise parking lot and move facilities to the edge of campus near Killiam Ave somewhere.
