More Schools, More Bowl Game Tie-Ins/Affiliations
Anyone hear if the SBC will have more Bowl tie-ins/affiliations since the SBC has more teams?

When the contracts run out and the tie-ins come up for renegotiation I’m sure some will flip to SBC. In the meantime, CUSA won’t be able to fill all their bowls so some of their bowls will go to other conferences.

I think that falls clearly into the ‘double whammy’ category.

I would surprised if a few of these things don't happen after the contracts change in 2025:

- New Orleans Bowl tie-in with Sun Belt continues, but the other slot switches from C-USA to AAC

- At least a partial (every two or three years) tie-in with the Independence Bowl

- -At least one more tie-in with ESPN-owned bowl games

- One tie-in with a P5 somewhete

Let’s hope so! That would be great! And the most likely to happen: switch to one of the best G5’s vs the worst one, to 2 best G5’s. Can’t see that espn won’t see it that way also.

- At least a partial (every two or three years) tie-in with the Independence Bowl

also great!

- -At least one more tie-in with ESPN-owned bowl games

one w/b great, 2 w/b fantastic

- One tie-in with a P5 somewhere

Let’s hope so!

The 2020-2025 bowl deal cycle prominently features the ESPN Events owned bowls having a certain number of slots available for each conference in an open selection format. In all likelihood, any Sun Belt eligible team is going to be put into one of the ESPN Event Bowls along with most of the other G5 conferences in order to create the best slate of matchups.

The New Orleans Bowl is NOT an ESPN Events matchup and has the separate deal outside of the ESPN Events selections.

The best way to look at our bowl lineup at present.

We have two tie ins that are committed to the SBC, and are not tied into the ESPN Bowl grouping. (Though both are televised by ESPN) We have a minimum of 3 Bowls that are granted through the ESPN Bowl Pool that come from several possible locations. However because we are involved in the pool, any other G5 league that fails to fill its slots will likely give its openings for the next couple years to excess SBC teams. At least until the bowl contracts come up for renewal in a year or so and we can renegotiate extra tie ins for the league.

We are pushing for one more bowl for Western schools and one more for Eastern schools. Trying to avoid a scenario that forces say Texas State to travel to Orlando for a bowl, when they could get better options closer to San Marcos.

It feels like we need another bowl in the East. It's just Myrtle Beach, Orlando, and Boca Raton right now, and it isn't a guarantee that ESPN places a SBC school in each of those bowls every season.

It's probably not popular to advocate for a new bowl game, but given our new footprint, a new bowl in Raleigh or Norfolk would be great. Either that, or find a way to tie-in to the bowl in Charlotte.

Charlotte would be ideal considering the East’s footprint.

Ive thought for years that a bowl could go over well in Norfolk/Virginia Beach. The only issue is the stadium is a bit over a half hour from the oceanfront. But not much different than Conway/Myrtle Beach. But if you know anything about our region, you know that in spite of the benefits to both, the odds of VB and Norfolk collaborating on something like that are slim.
