Divisions were never necessary to determine a champion and I never understood why the NCAA made it a requirement to host a Conference CG.

And it has become untenable as leagues grow. Every player who stays 4 years should play every team in the league at least once. A couple of years ago Auburn played Florida for the first time in a decade or something like that. I hope AAC does something like this. Get to have a better variety of road trips year in and year out.

CCG began when a D2 league grew to 12 and asked the NCAA if they could have one. So they made a rule that a 12 member league with divisions could do so. This inspired the SEC to take advantage of this and expand.

I know but it was still a stupid rule initiated by the NCAA and the fact they have rescinded this rule proves it was unnecessary in the first place.

I don’t think the NCAA foresaw what would happen when they approved it for the D2 league. Most leagues had ten at the time and they probably didn’t think everyone would be doing it or what a cash cow it would become. I remember people mocking the SEC when they started their CCG.

I recall more mocking of the $1/year the local goobers charged them to rent their conference HQ, in exchange for keeping that conference championship game at Legion Field. The game left, the rent remained, no one went to prison.

I wonder where that one dollar a year goes? What does it help fund?
