Interesting article from 538. I was going to post it in one of the transfer threads, but thought it would be better to keep the discussion out of there.

It's not just the guys who are taking advantage of the NIL. These twins are transferring to U of Miami (from Fresno State) to play basketball, and have a 7 figure NIL contract already in place.

This is the key paragraph for me, from this article:

“Most people say if you sign 25 high school kids, you’re building for the future more — but are you?” Lane Kiffin asked The Athletic. “You don’t have 25 kids for five years like you used to, because they have the one-time transfer rule now. But now that one-time transfer can’t transfer again. So your analytics of that guy staying in your program are higher than the high school guy.”

All we need to do is give Elon Musk a honorary degree. He could offer the five best college basketball players in the country $20 million each and a Tesla to come play for his new “alma mater”. 100 million cost to him would amount to pocket change. William & Mary would be national champs. As a bonus, this would really demonstrate what a joke college athletics has become. Hang that banner. Get it done Elon!

More likely that he buys Elon University.

This is exactly my thinking. Targeting high potential underclassmen transfers should be the priority. You can then be pretty confident to have them until they graduate. Any promising high school recruit you bring in that produces will most likely be gone after freshman or sophomore year

Seems like this could help keep high school recruiting budgets down also. This may have been discussed here before, but is there any indication that we'll have an easier or harder time getting transfers admitted vs high school students?

Not rare enough. Those two are relentless, classless, soft-core self-promoters masquerading as college athletes.

The all-conference basketball players are masquerading as athletes?

One of them was conference player of the year as a sophomore too.

But it’s all good. I’m sure TribeFan1983 also said that Zion Williamson was a classless, soft-core self-promoter pretending to be a college athlete when he was making all those dunk videos in high school.

Agreed. The recruiting window has essentially just moved a year or two. I would treat high school recruits like the transfers of yesteryear and focus energy on recruiting 1st time transfers out of the portal.

While we're here, W&M should absolutely be able to use the NIL deals to our advantage. We have the alumni for it already, especially compared to our conference peers. I think that soon instead of donating to a program some of our wealthier alumni should just consider putting together an NIL deal direct to athletes.

Per these links, the Cavinder twins make their money with nude/ semi-nude TikTok videos, not basketball prowess. I doubt Zion's fans follow him for that reason. Sorry for the explicit content, but you challenged me on this.

It is possible to make your point without linking to porn sites. There are all manner of people that come here, and I believe we indirectly represent our university. I suggest we project a better look.

OK. I'll delete the links.

And if people are willing to pay them for that, why shouldn't they? It's not their fault there isn't a massive market for women playing the sport they're really good at.

If anything it just illustrates the absurdity of the old rules.

For that matter, why should any hot young girl wait tables for minimum wage when she can make lots more money doing porn?

So the claim here is that all-conference basketball players are not worthy of being called athletes because of also being influencers?

Calling the Cavinder twins "influencers" is sad. It demeans all the female college athletes who don't hustle for fame and money by spreading their breasts and bootie all over the internet.

This has nothing to do with W&M. If you wish to continue this conversation, please take it to Siberia aka Off Topic.
