RE: Big Whale Boosters
A percentage of current older alumni (the ones with the cash) are paying attention, and will close their wallets the more “progressive” the school becomes.
I’m not going to debate this idea that somehow W&M is more academic than it was in the 70’s and 80’s. I received a top notch all-around education with an all-around student body at “southern” “conservative” W&M in the 70’s. If that is still happening, good for the school … but I’m not seeing it … W&M is becoming a “NE” “liberal” institution … plenty of those to choose from. On the demographics side, the school has become less appealing for males, the gap between males and females grows, and at this “progressive” rate, W&M should consider becoming an all female school.

I think your post explains the change better than mine did. We are of a similar era, and I think we are seeing the same things.

If Tribe32 hadn't quoted that post, I'd have missed out on a pretty great laugh. Much appreciated.

Political beliefs aside…and I’d personally appreciate us avoiding that topic…there are a lot of real world issues right now. Gas prices area ridiculous, purchase interest rates have gone up, inflation, war, and there’s a shortage of baby formula. I suggest we also had some major issues going on 15-20 years ago; terrorist attacks, major war with which we were directly involved, stock market crashed, and probably babies couldn’t have formula or something absurd like that. But, somehow, we fully funded very inspirational athletics programs. So, the real question is, what led to supporters’ apathy? And, why did you immediately think “Huge?” Actually, the helpful resolution is to get beyond blaming and offer real solutions to regaining legitimacy.
For me, that means cutting some sports, winning in the major sports, and rebuild trust among ALL supporters, big and small. I haven’t given “substantially” to Tribe Athletics in a long time because I have little faith that my donation is appreciated and I don’t think my hard earned money will go to anything meaningful. I’ll be damned if I’m going to fork over $2000 just to learn later that some consultant received my cash.

IMO, after the Tribe7 fiasco, those two things are mutually exclusive.

RE: Big Whale Boosters
I am just a little guy, but I read most of the emails etc and peruse the alumni magazines. I'm sure there are people much more well versed in the current direction of W&M than I am, but I am also sure that many do not read as much "W&M stuff" as I do. That said:
I really have no idea where W&M wants to be academically or athletically in 5-10 years. So it is hard to give money to something when I don't know what vision I am contributing to. And no, corporate jargon of "have world class academics and compete athletically at the highest levels" does not tell me anything of value.

Boehly helped found the Boehly Center for Excellence in Finance in 2014 at William & Mary's Raymond A. Mason School of Business with his wife Katie Boehly via a multi-year gift.[65][66] They also sponsor the yearly women's Stock Pitch and Leadership Summit at William & Mary. In 2020, Boehly and Katie committed funding to the construction of a new athletic complex and sports performance center at the college.[67] They were honorary co-chairs of a $55 million campaign to fund William & Mary Athletics in 2021.[68]
In January 2021, Boehly partnered with William & Mary to produce a series of courses for students at the Boehly Center for Excellence in Finance.[69]
