Was on the basketball team too.
Caught a TD at the Big House.
Good dude off the field too.

Walter Church was the QB back then. EMU had somenice QBs Scott Davis and Schmitt Roback.

Church and Davis came from where? Ypsilanti High School. Schmitt from Central Michigan. Roback from Toledo. Gosh I miss the days of local recruits.

RE: Let's Remember Some Guys
Dear Friends,
Two players from the Trosko era that I think should be mentioned, are Tom Prieur and Terry Hurley.
Tom Prieur was the starting quarterback for the 1962 season and passed for 878 yards. That was better then the previous seven quarterbacks, and better then the five quarterbacks after Prieur.
Terry Hurley was a receiver whose 1962 season garnered 534 yards in receptions and 5 touchdowns. That was better then the previous ten receivers, and better then the six receivers after him.
Eastern's record that year was 2-5. One also has to keep in mind that these were the years of no scholarships. You had to love football to play for Eastern in the early sixties.

So was Carlos Medlock. If both could have stayed healthy at the same times...

How about Mick Penisi (Australian mate). He had a very nice sophomore season coming off the bench on a stacked club. He was poised to be a major contributor his junior season but decided to be sneaky and play professionally in Australia during the offseason, got caught and lost his eligibility. He was a very, very nice stretch 4 at 6’9” with a very solid game!

Bobby Windom was a great back. His FB leading the way, Doug Crisan was from my hometown (Northville). James "Black Magic" Hall was a dynamic little receiver for "Rocky." I was 10 and that team, coached by Ed Chlebek made me fall in love with the Hurons and of course, they were my college of choice after graduating high school.

All these great, colorful players in EMU history and you come with...Breck Turner? I do feel kind of sorry for recent alums who haven't really witnessed the best days in EMU athletics.

Honestly, he was a missed opportunity for sure, thanks for mentioning him. The Crieghton era has had only ONE running back with breakaway speed and that was Turner. He did fumble far more than Shaq or Ericksen, but he was explosive, and I think we wasted his potential.

I didn't know all that. Actually, none of it.

Just looked at his EMU stats. 84 games, 2.7ppg, 1.6 rpg. He was a 6'9" stiff.

His "very nice sophomore season" consisted of 1.3 ppg and 1.2 rpg. He was not a good player at all. He averaged 8 minutes per game that year.

That was a GREAT team, I was a sophomore at EMU and attended every game. Doug Crisan was a good looking guy and his girlfriend, Serena Ross was absolutely the most beautiful woman on campus. Of course, Ed Chlebek was poached by Boston College and we experienced the "Stock is Rising" program where we hired a great assistant coach to the head coach position and led the nation in consecutive game losses.

Something I have noticed by all this history name dropping; The majority of the players mentioned were from a two hour radius from Ypsilanti. Walt Church, Scott Davis and Fred Cofield were indeed Ypsilanti High Braves. No JT4's from Louisiana.
Has the world changed that much or did EMU and its perception do so? Interested on everyone's opinion.

RE: Let's Remember Some Guys
Dear Jerry,
I don't know about today's players, but checking back to 1972 I would agree with your original statement about the vast majority being from the Detroit Metropolitan area, and a few from other areas of the State. One of the exceptions was one of our quarterbacks, Houstan Booth, of Bougalusa, Louisiana.
Also, looking back at older rosters, there was what seems to be the same amount of attrition, but no transfer portal. Could have been grades, home sickness, not playing enough, or just not wanting to play organized football any more.

We definitely have to get back to recruiting locally. I'm sick of CMU getting all the top MAC-level players in the state.
