Feel bad for our coaches having to recruit in this landscape.
The sticker shock of college football rectuiting
The whole article is worth your time and an athletic sub to read, but it boils down to the fact that many schools have setup 3rd party NIL collectives where they pay a recruit cash over a 2-4 year period if they sign with the collective and agree to let the collective use their name in any advertising deals the collective entity manages to sign come up with. The contracts do not explicitly state the athlete has to sign with the school the collective represents, but it is obviously part of the deal. It's important to note that the recruit gets his money wether the collective signs the player to any NIL deals or not. Many of the deals are non-exclusive, meaning the player is free to go out and get his own independent NI deals as well.
A notable quote from Lane Kiffen: “I think it’s not going to be long until every signee at a Power 5 school is on some form of NIL — and that may be this coming year”
It's not just the blue-blood schools doing this, not even just "Power Five" schools, FIU has an NIL collective for example.

RE: Feel bad for our coaches having to recruit in this landscape.
Lane Kiffin on Tennessee's commitment from 5-star QB in the class of '23:
“You’re going to have all these locker room dynamics where now you’re reading, you got a player coming into school over there in East Tennessee for $8 million dollars that hasn’t played a down,” Kiffin said while responding to a question about NIL and the transfer portal. “And you’ve got a locker room saying, ‘Wait, now what if the guy doesn’t play? How’s that going to work? How is that donor going to feel, that paid all that money, when the guy’s not playing?’ So you’ve got a lot of things that haven’t been figured out at all.”

Why would anybody promote UAB Football or want kids from here when we didn’t hear a thing from Bill the whole spring.
Outside of Clark’s side hustle of summer camps, we will not hear from him again until media day.
McBride is our featured back, that’s who should be marketed in our own advertising.
Pretty good point about Clark. He’s a hell of a coach but NIL is not looking like his strong point atleast to the public

If I was a donor giving big money to one of those NIL collectives, that sort of contract would make me very nervous. If the contract does not specify that the athlete getting the money has to play for Big Donor X's team in exchange, what keeps him from cashing in and leaving? I know that they can't use specific targets like a 1,000 yard rushing season because that gets into prohibited pay for play, but if the contract does not specify that Recruit X is getting $150,000/season to play OL at Enormous State U, how do you hold him to it?
I'm waiting for someone to take that money then transfer, or "get injured".

It's a really slippery slope, and for once, I do not blame the NCAA for trying to force Congress to get involved here. This article has some good information.
https://www.sportingnews.com/us/ncaa-foo...d1m5vmnvw4
Is anything actually illegal now?
Of course. It’s still the NCAA. Let’s say there’s a big booster that owns a car dealership. That booster still can’t say, “I’ll give you $50k to attend and star for my alma mater.” That’s still illegal. There are still going to be the same type of recruiting restrictions that have resulted in infractions and punishments in the past.
This is the biggest question I've had from the get go. Under this system, you are supposed to be getting paid for your name and image, not that of the university you attend. While this explicitly states the car dealership thing is illegal, prove it. The NIL is not supposed to be allowed to be used as a recruiting tool, but we all know that is happening all over. I personally do not believe the system is sustainable as is, but I'm not certain what changes can be made at this point to make it work better.

I think it would be hilarious if a five star QB signed somewhere and also had a $1,000,000 NIL. Then he is a backup for two years behind another stud QB. Then when it is his turn to start, he decides that having $2,000,000 in the bank plus a college degree is a good start in life so he decides he doesn’t want to worry about CTE or not being able to walk and just hangs it up and gets a real job.

What is going to be fun is when some rich booster or booster collective invests a couple of million to get a stud QB recruit who then rides the bench for two or three years and is not quite good enough to start. Result, whining, pressure on the coach, and a reluctance to do it again.
NFL scouts miss on recruits all the time with their college film and production in front of them. That misjudgement is even more likely with a HS kid.
It's gonna take new laws, someone willing to enforce them, and two or three years for this to start to normalize. It's the Wild West, and the new sheriff has not even gotten to town yet.
It's gonna be fun when some rich bammer, teasip, Sooner booster pisses a couple mil down the drain though, you know that it is coming.

I'll tell you one thing, a real positive is going to be these guys learning at a much earlier age about taxes. An 18 year old kid going straight to the top marginal tax bracket? Going to be an eye-opener.
Says the accountant to the QB: "Yes Jimmy, Bob's Chevy paid you $1,000,000. Here's your check for $650,000."
Jimmy: "Where's the rest???"
Accountant: "The Tax Man cometh."

You know, I'd be good with paying about two million in taxes, as long as I have the income to trigger them.

Feel bad for our coaches having to recruit in this landscape.
In response to the title of this thread, I find it difficult to feel bad for any coach making $500,000 or more to coach players. I don’t care how difficult it is to sign players now.

Jay Wright retires today and I bet a large part of his decision to do so was in part due to this transfer portal mess.

That's certainly possible. Let's see how long he is able to stay away from the game.
That said, good for him. He goes out on top, by his own choice. He's got plenty of money, and he's just 60. He can go live a fine, rewarding life doing anything he chooses. That's a sweet gig.

CB TV analyst. Fox and ESPN will throw major money his way to do the gig. DD will of course disagree with this take....lol.

I agree. I just don’t feel bad for anyone’s job that makes half a million or more. No matter how difficult it becomes due to changing rules.

If he wants to do that, fine. That's what's so cool about it. It's all his choice. Stay or go? Up to him. Take a TV job half a year for big money? Great, if he wants to. Go buy vacation homes on a tropical island and a mountaintop? Sure, more power to him.

Let’s see how good he is on camera if he pursues it, but Dick Vitale will leave a big void. Someone will try to fill it. Kinda doubt it’ll be Seth Greenberg lol.
