No wonder all of their sports programs are in shambles with the exception of WBB.

Their knock on Mackie was lack of head coaching experience.

I alluded to this in the other thread, the only reason BJ was being considered for the job was because he is a legend in that program, He would have never made it that far into the hiring process at another P5 school.
As for this will cause the South Carolina program to fall into shambles.. Huh?
Paris is a good coach, Not sure why hiring an experienced coach with a track record is bad vs hiring a former program Superstar.
I did think BJ would get the job when it got down to 2.

Yes, but he was a great player for USC. The few years of experience Paris has is not that significant.

Speaking of head coaches - Murray State coach to LSU.

Paris has BJ beat in every metric when it comes to coaching.
Been an assistant since 97.
was an Assistant at a P5 school for 7 years.
Was a head coach of a Div 1 program for 5 years.
took his team to the NCAA tournament.
McKie has only been in coaching since 2011 (Paris was already at Wisconsin for a year before he even started).
has been a P5 assistant coach for 2 years, no head coaching experience.
They ONLY reason BJ has fast tracked his career so much (not saying he is a bad coach) is because of his on the court credentials not his on the bench ones.
And as I said the only reason he made it that far in the hiring process was because it was South Carolina.

I admit when it came down to 2 I thought he had the job but I think Paris is the better choice.

EDIT: The better choice between those 2, not sure he is the hire I would make but If iwere betweeen McKie and Paris
I would go with Paris on experience but maybe McKie to make the fanbase happy (and if it didn't work out, well YOU wanted him)
McKie would have been the safer hire for the AD.

My congratulations go out to all the mid-major minors who groom coaches for the majors, Chattanooga our most recent SoCon brethren. Now with the portal in full swing, they can groom more student athletes to more readily join this party. What a grand system the modern NCAA has become - not to mention where all the money is now concentrated. Go all you (us) mid-major minor college athletic programs. Yea.

Hopefully Paris takes Malachi Smith and a few others with him.

This might be your silliest take yet. There is no correlation between the transfer portal and coaches getting better jobs moving up. I mean damn how dare Coach K leaves Army and go to Duke? Or Bartow leaves UAB and go to UCLA.. No, that stuff never happened until the transfer portal.01-wingedeagle

I don't understand your disdain for people wanting to make more money take a more challenging job.

The portal just hurries the process along. If Coach Oliver were to land three or four players off the portal in the coming months, then won the SoCon next year with them, we'd be speculating about bigger schools swooping in to poach him.

Dan Earl, VMI, named as the new coach at Chattanooga. I think they picked a good one.

Dan Earl was someone who I was hoping that ETSU would have considered in our most recent vacancy. Forget his record, he is a well respected coach around the league and will do well at UTC.
