Mann brings a Division I pedigree to a Division II school that has long considered making the leap to Division I. That move could become a reality, after recent media reports that football coach Matt Mitchell had told recruits that the transition was going to happen.
WMU (overall not just hoops) better get their sh$t together and fast. Talk about 2 schools heading in opposite directions. GVSU clearly has larger ambitions and could really deal a death blow to WMU competing for the same students/athletes/coaches/faculty/etc in same region.

From a pure athletic perspective, the move to D1 for GVSU could be a big mistake. They essentially would go from a really big fish in a small D2 pond to just another D1 school in my mind. Their recent athletic conquests would fall off big time.

Indeed, GVSU has almost always had the 'vision thing', WMU not so much.
It all comes down to leadership at the top.

GVSU has 25,000 students-more than WMU. From an athletics accomplishment standpoint they've pretty much done all they can do at Division 2, you can only command so much attention from dominating schools like Hillsdale College (1500 students) and NMU (6700 students). They will probably consider Div 1AA in football before jumping to Div 1, but they're ready to fish or cut bait in basketball. Grand Rapids leadership has a vision for GVSU and deep pockets to support it-privately and in Lansing. Western better get on the ball or they can forget it.
