Good for him.

Hope he does better there than at Portage Northern.

Hawk was always class... I am so happy that he was able to go back to Quincy... well deserved.

You must not know about Buck Read (you know, the coach the fieldhouse is named after).

He will be HC there for 9 years, come back to WMU as an assistant for 3 years, be hired as the head coach for WMU in 2036. Coach WMU for 20 years including 2 appearances in the big dance but will ultimately be fired in 2056 for 3 or 4 years of mediocre seasons. He will then coach at Portage Central leading them to a 1-30 record before being rehired at Quincy. WMU will hire Hawk's assistant who will be thrown into the middle of a pandemic and will ultimately be fired within 2 years.

How the hell did Hawk go 1-20 at Portage Northern? I mean I could win one single game at PN and I didn't spend 15 years as a head coach at a D-1 school. Unreal.

Everyone knew Hawkins was in for HUGE project at PN.
With school of choice the best players transfer to play for coach of their choice.

Literally the most successful coach we've ever had *since World War II.

Yes, generally speaking, I'm usually quite happy.

Hey, you're the one who said "most successful coach ever."

I'd argue he is our most successful ever being the level of competition in those days wasn't great and we weren't competing at the highest level. Hawk getting us into modern ncaa tournaments is probably the pinacle of success for our program.

RE: Hawk returns to Quincy
Perhaps.

Read's teams won at Madison Square Garden twice (over St. Johns and Manhattan), defeated Michigan (twice), beat defending NC Utah, Notre Dame, and Marquette in the '40s.

Hawkins' overall win percentage is lower than Bill Perigo (1949-52, Read's successor) and Eldon Miller (1970-76).

His MAC win percentage is lower than Perigo's and the same as Miller's.

So it's debatable if Hawkins was our most successful coach ever or even since WW II.

FWIW Perigo left WMU to be head coach at Michigan, Miller at Ohio State.

Just an opinion from Ypsilanti.

Hawk was the best X and O coach Michigan MAC coach in the last 25 years. He also built his program by recruiting freshman while his counterparts were courting transfers. The game changed, Hawk did not, and he suffered the consequences. The same happened to Bob Knight, Bruce Weber and Roy Williams, to name just a few.

The guy is a basketball guru, just listen to him for awhile and that becomes evident. I hope he does well in Qunicy but I think he would have been better off as an assistant teaching actual basketball in a larger program. Kind of like Phil Martelli at Michigan.
