There was a big event at the new Alumni House yesterday and both Mann and Fischer addressed the attendees...if Fischer was leaving it would not seem that Mann would be introducing Dane and they would be speaking together.

Fischer mixed with everyone before his presentation...which said nothing new...so we can assume he's back.

MEN'S BASKETBALL: JOURNEY INTO THE ABYSS
Mann will have to take a hard decision or two at some point. Firing a coach, cutting programs, reallocating funds, etc. I’m not saying he should get all Huge on Tribe Athletics but waiting for a spark of rainbow is bad leadership. Identify issues, plan, re-evaluate, leverage costs, re-evaluate, and go.

RE: MEN'S BASKETBALL: JOURNEY INTO THE ABYSS
Mann has been able to see all of the teams and coaches by now, granted there is a lot of spring sports to go. He hasn't moved on from anyone so far, so he may not at all this year. The two things that he doesn't have in his background are managing money and operations. He has the fund raising part nailed, but he had to fill a lot of slots that were gutted by Huge and the eventual departure of her minions. Seems to me that he needs to get stabilized first and then start to make changes. I have no clue where they are, but it can't be great yet.

RE: MEN'S BASKETBALL: JOURNEY INTO THE ABYSS
Our basketball programs have fallen to the depths.

For gosh sakes, in our own state of Virginia we have been overtaken by Norfolk State, Longwood, and Liberty. And why mention
Richmond, Virginia Tech and Richmond whose programs leave us in the dust.

And our athletic program in general is near rock bottom with mediocre teams in almost every sport save a CAA championship in swimming.

I cannot remember our athletic program with few, if any, nationally ranked players in anything.

Brian Mann has lots to do. He needs all our support to raise the sinking ship.

Of course, ODU and JMU have left us in the dust.

I mean, I'm on board with coaches that connect to better times for sure. Not sure if he's shown a whole lot better than what we have though.

He just got fired for underperforming so I’m not sure he would really be a wise option, though I really don’t know much about him or URI. He is a Tribe alum, not sure what other boxes he’s supposed to check off beyond his fit here and coaching abilities. Trying to check off non related job boxes seems to be where we got in this mess to begin with.

I think Dane deserves his final year anyway. We have two excellent recruits coming in, at least according to WM08 who seems on top of all this. I assume they bring in the talent Dane needs.

Unless this is satire, this has to be the joke of the day. The Sun belt is a lower ranked league than the CAA - and that’s in a down year for the CAA. I remember when both programs were excellent. Now I’m disappointed if we don’t beat them even when our team is struggling. Our record against both the last ten years has been lopsided…..in our favor.

This is a basketball thread.

And I wouldn’t even buy the comment for football. The Sun Belt isn’t leaving anyone in the dust.

Well, certainly ODU has. And of course VCU. And probably GMU too.

And you could add Richmond, Liberty and Longwood just to pile onto how many VA schools have surpassed us.

This is silly. Our ODU game this season was something that I feel bad that any fans had to watch. Their program is in nearly the same state as ours, we just had a worse season this year. You can tell how bad it is in that they couldn't get fans to drive up 64. When ODU was good and we were bad, it was almost a home game for them. ODU fans stopped coming up years ago though.

I'm still not convinced this isn't a 2nd Tribester account.

ODU's last eight seasons include a tourney berth and four 25-win seasons. We don't have a single one in our history.

And even if they hadn't experienced any kind of success, they would not at all be "in nearly the same state as ours."

Nah, ODU is bad, we're bad. It's the same.

Fischer won CAA Coach of the Year his first year ('19-'20), winning 21 games. The question was whether the success was due to coaching or to Fischer, in my opinion, can't coach Div. I basketball. He is probably a great assistant coach but I don't think he is a good head coach.

Since I don't see the current players getting any better under his tutelage, he would need to recruit some real studs --- which I don't see happening at W&M. Without true studs, Fischer would need to "coach em up" to perform at a winning level...and he has not exhibited any talent for that in three years.
having Nate Knight, Andy Van Vliet, et al on the roster. I, and I think most Tribe fans, attributed it to the players.

Now, after two more seasons, I don't think that there is any question.
Saving $300,000-$400,000 salary is not enough to compensate for just throwing away another year. The sooner we get someone else and start winning then the sooner more donations will start rolling in.

Alum David Cox is available...any thoughts??

I know everyone wants the team to be successful this year. But if Dane isn't the guy, what is the profile that the board would like to see in the next coach?

Personally, I think we should lean in heavily onto a strategist/tactician type of coach. Heavy Xs and Os guy. I don't think WM will ever be pulling in the top recruits in the country (or even the conference until we start winning). So I'd like a coach with a unique philosophy (LMU's run and gun, VCU's havoc, UVA's packline, whatever) and then can recruit smart guys to execute it.

I love Coach Holmes and was all about keeping him around for continuity within the program and I think he is a fantastic recruiter. Now that time has passed, I'd love to have him as an assistant again, but we really should be looking at bringing in a higher caliber head coach. I don't mean this as a knock on Holmes. If we are intent on going Shaver coaching tree, I'd target Aldridge. He's proven successful as a head man at the D1 level.
