Bellarmine, which isn’t eligible for the NCAA tournament due to its transition to D-1, just won the Atlantic Sun tournament.

The ASUN decided to let Bellarmine complete in its tournament even though they aren’t eligible to for The NCAAs and passed a rule that if Bellarmine won that the regular season champ would get the autobid. As a result, Jacksonville State — which lost to Jacksonville in the semis but won regular-season title — gets the league’s bid and Jacksonville, which just beat JSU yesterday, stays home.

I really don’t understand why you would allow a transitional team to be in the tournament.

The transition period exists to discourage schools from moving up.
Letting them play in your tournament just potentially screws up your tourney.

Absolutely right. Glad someone agrees with me on that. That would be number one on my list to improve college basketball. I also realize it will never happen. Lol

I agree with y’all. Makes 3 games in one weekend in March more important than 15+ over the course of several months

I think players, for the most part, dont dream of winning the "name your mid-major conference" regular season championship. They dream of making a splash in march madness. Conference tourneys are going to exist because of money, and as long as thats the case I like having the auto-bid to the NCAA tourney tied to it because it keeps as many teams playing to reach those march madness dreams as long as possible instead of having the vast majority of seasons becoming meaningless 2/3rds of the way through the conference schedule.

Winning the regular season still has meaning, and we have the trophies at Bartow to prove it, but chasing that NCAA banner is the heart of march madness, and I want as many teams hunting it as long as possible.

I honestly believe conference tourneys for traditional one bid leagues are more hurtful than helpful.

That sucks for Jacksonville U., whose head coach, Jordan Mincy, is the younger brother of UAB great Jerome Mincy.

College basketball has too many games. As a fan, I don’t like saying that because I watch them all, and I love watching college ball even beyond the Blazers, but the product would be a whole lot better to cut season down to about 25 games.

With that said, I like the conference tournaments. If you watch some of these smaller leagues this week, the atmosphere can be awesome. And it is really good exposure to see that some of these low and mid major programs play some excellent and entertaining basketball.

What should happen is cut down the regular season, eliminate the nit and expand the ncaa two more rounds.

I like conference tourneys as well, I just don't think the auto bid should be attached to it. You should be awarded for how you performed during the regular season, not a lose and you go home 4 game tournament scenario.

The conference tourney can still hold value without the auto bid being attached to it:

1. Could serve as potential resume building games for a team on the bubble for an at-large for the Dance or NIT.

2. A team can still win a trophy for being tourney champs.

But since that ain't happening I would be cool with taking the top four teams in the standings at the end of the regular season and have them play for the auto bid instead of the entire conference.

Or flip the automatic berth to reg season and allow tournament winners to enhance at-large profile or claim NIT bid.
