I've been abbreviating it "Cinn".

So I guess I can't argue that too much : )

Miami University does not like to be called Miami of Ohio. Even tho I call them that out of habit & hear them called that all the time.

Cincy is acceptable (never Cinci).

If you have a problem spelling the city take it up with the Ancient Romans. I guess it could be worse, the settlement’s original name was Losantiville, a concocted name from several languages meaning “city opposite the mouth of the Licking River.”

The city's name itself is mispronounced a lot so I have to imagine the school's name is as well. Norfolk State. If you make an 'L' sound at all you are saying it wrong.

RE: Butchered Names
The worst abbreviation I’ve seen was a conference. A few years ago, the ESPN ticker abbreviated “Southland” as “Southl’nd.”

It is not infrequent for nitwits to mix-up Mississippi State, Mississippi, and Southern Mississippi. I observe careless sports media anchors and commentators making such mistakes at times.

One bad one i saw live was a newscaster pronouncing UALR like Bueller.

A lady I used to work with played soccer there, and she pronounced it like Bueller without the B. Maybe it’s more of a campus or local thing than statewide? Maybe the announcer was an on campus guy.

Maybe so. I haven't heard it since. The only other name I heard was when we got some throwback LRU hats.

RE: Butchered Names
So for those of us outside the states who mainly see things only in written form how should the following be pronounced?

I get that SEC is S E C and not Sec

But I guess MAC is Mac as in Maction correct?

Is WAC, W A C or Wac

Also is NCAA pronounced NC double A

Thanks in advance

RE: Butchered Names
My understanding of the pronunciations:

MAAC = mack (?)
MAC = mack
MEAC = mee-ack (NOT meek)
NEC = en-ee-see (NOT neck)
SEC = es-ee-see
SWAC = swack
WAC = wack

For NCAA, I've heard it both spelled out and "N C double A". I think the latter is more common.

RE: Butchered Names
It's also not the MAC Conference. That's saying the Mid American Conference Conference. No one says SEC Conference for example. It's the MAC or Mid American Conference.

I think we've all said things like HIV virus, ATM machine, and PIN number, even though they are redundant as well. (Although I don't think I've ever heard "MAC Conference.")
