Many probably feel the same, but its tough. New AD might help. But the championship last year made it a tougher call. Add to it he has continued to show improvement, even if modestly.
Year 1: 9-23 (3-15)- 10 seed (preseason 9), lost first round; 0-1
Year 2: 13-20 (6-12)- 8 seed (preseason 9), lost QF; 1-1
Year 3: 13-19 (7-11)- 6 seed (preseason 9), lost QF; 0-1
Year 4: 14-19 (6-12)- 8 seed (preseason 8), lost QF; 1-1
Year 5: 12-8 (4-5)- 6 seed (preseason 3), won CAAT; 3-0
Year 6: 15-14 (10-8)- 4 seed (preseason 3), eliminated in QF; 0-1
Overall: 76-103 (36-63); 5-5 in CAAT
6 years to take a really bad program and turn it into a winning program in the CAA. Certainly not great, not eye opening, but still a tough sell that he is not making progress. No off court issues with any players. Even changed the narrative some with 5 road conference wins this season. Was his first top 4 finish in conference. Nobody ever said Drexel was easy to win at.
That being said, we also returned as much if not more than anyone in the conference and finished below preseason expectations. Struggled to win multiple games in a row. And with a bunch of seniors and experience, that cannot be looked at favorably. Resume is certainly underwhelming, but there is clear slow progress each year. Tough spot.
Feels like the title has saved him (rightfully) but what do you do now? A 1 year deal to preserve recruits next year? Leaving a coach as a lame duck is always a bad move. Based on the above, can you really fathom a multi year extension? If given 1 more year before making a decision, what do you need to see? This team is clearly going to take a step back next season without Cam, JB and company (one would think). So what would need to happen next season to tell him "Yes we are extending you otherwise we are going in a different direction"? Tough call for sure.
