RE: UTSA
The rest thing absolutely should not matter to 20 year olds but it clearly effects this team, as we’ve been @$$ in a lot of the back end games. Recurring theme all season.

Yeah a 13 pt win against that team isn’t impressive. Surprised we didn’t drop more.

As they should. But the statistics doesn't drop drastically with a day of rest between two games. And NBA players don't get 5 days off during any point during the regular season except for the All Star break.

We can agree to disagree but in my opinion well conditioned 18 to 24 yr old players shouldn't be physically worn out from playing two games in three days. They just shouldn't be.

Especially not in a sport so closely tied to tournament formats. You have pre-season tournaments, mid-season tournaments, and post-season tournaments...all of which involve playing games in close succession.

If you get put in a play-in game in the NCAAs, you have to turn right around in two days and play a game against somebody that didn't. And if you get placed directly into the first round and win, you are still turning around right away to play another game 2 days later.

If you don't earn a Top 2 seed in the Conference Tournament, you have to win 4 games in 4 days to win it. If you don't earn a 1st round bye at all, it's 5 games in 5 days.

Conditioning should be near the top of priorities for a team being built to compete in tournaments.

You guys don’t understand conditioning. It isn’t about being tired, it’s about bounce and explosion and it does make a difference. In a game that is all physics and geometry, a half inch or split second magnified over a game makes a ton of difference. This has been studied thoroughly and isn’t even in dispute. The facts bear this out. NBA players are among the best conditioned athletes in the world and it is completely proven at that level. This is why you manage minutes. A half inch here, a split second there is the difference between going 4 rounds or going home.

It’s just easier to criticize. Can you believe those bums actually missed shots last night? Unbelievable. Hopefully AK has a completely new team next season. Can’t have guys missing shots.

I completely understand conditioning and there is a relation between that and fatigue.

You were really hard on Clark and the football team. But you’ve turned apologist for the basketball team - what gives? Honest question.

Clark’s been here five years and has had the same team each year, and for whatever reason people seem to overlook the whole “leading the nation in penalties” thing as just “physical defense sometimes gone wrong”. AK is in year 2 here and when he got here, the basketball program was the lowest it’s ever been. It honestly might’ve been worse than when football had to be brought back from being shut down. He at least had us in the bubble conversation up until last week really and has gotten notable OOC wins this year and competing against teams in major conferences, something we’ve yet to do in football until this past bowl game (and I’d rather see it in a regular season game, when a team is at full strength and there’s no question of lack of motivation). Now if he’s still here in 2 or 3 years without a tourney appearance and on the fringe of the bubble at best, then I’ll be critical. Plus, AK at least acknowledges when he’s at fault and isn’t afraid to call out the team for poor play, and not make excuses like being tired or blame officiating. Don’t bring up football, I’m actually enjoying basketball this season.

Easily the best thing in my time as a fan (since the 2009-10 season)

RE: UTSA
There is a difference between fatigue and lack of conditioning. NBA players are among the best conditioned athletes in the world, anyone would agree. The statistics, as well researched as any aspect of modern basketball, show a clear drop off in performance across the board on the 2nd leg of back to backs, with a more pronounced drop in both individual and team performance when on the road. This is undeniable.

This is now very much part of the advanced analytics of elite basketball, and it is why coaching staffs now monitor minutes of even the biggest superstars to better ensure they are at peak status at crunch time and for playoffs.

Basketball is truly a game of inches, leverage and physics, so this isn’t about being “tired” but about being in best position to exert leverage. It is the difference between the key deflection or finishing through contact or getting the rebound vs tipping it with 10 seconds to go and the damn ball going to the other guy who then hits the game winning 3 to cost you a championship. Two evenly matched athletes, one whose knee is slightly tight vs one who is not, maybe makes a difference in 1-2 missed shots or a deflection. Yes this matters. It is why they spend time and money researching it and monitoring it.

It would be understandable at the collegiate level that this isn’t monitored in the same way. Fewer games, less depth on roster, fewer resources, few true back to backs.

But I am saying maybe it should be, especially if 1) you have a depth advantage; 2) you play a high energy style; 3) your key players have to work really hard to get open looks.

Maybe we struggle on Sundays because our top players should have played less minutes when we were kicking the crap out of teams in Bartow? Maybe we struggle on Sundays because we don’t use depth to advantage?

Not much to do about it now but might be a good off-season project to really review this.
