What the announcers are calling a "wild pitch" was a foul ball. Not sure why we didn't challenge after a bad challenge earlier. Would be a 0-0 game if we had.

Hawks lose 3 - 1 in 11 innings.
The ladies fought hard today. They'll be back.

RE: Softball
Winstead was lights out all year but got a taste of big league hitting in the NCAA tournament. Hopefully a great learning experience of what she needs to change going forward. The number one thing I saw was keeping her pitches down in the strike zone. You don't see many homeruns in softball ripped over the fence, they tend to be high hits of high pitches.

And to think there were thoughts of dumping softball. Luckily more sensible heads prevailed and allowed improving the facilities to help in recruiting. We are also blessed with a great coach and supporting staff. They are drawing nice sized crowds of fans. This program is definitely going in the right direction.

One would have to think it's upward from here! I think the team is pretty young too if i'm not mistaken

I had never heard any discussion about ending softball. When did that happen?

Softball was one of the programs considered being dropped a couple years ago. Along with swimming and diving, track and I believe volleyball.

RE: Softball
Can't believe it was 9 years ago, but it was considered then that UNCW men's indoor track/cross country, men's and women's swimming/diving and softball teams be eliminated. So maybe not volleyball. At least at that time.

RE: Softball
There have been 2 attempts made to reduce the number of sports UNCW offers
2013 - M Indoor Track, M Cross Country. M/W Swimming, Softball
https://www.wect.com/story/22261553/sour...-programs/

2015 - M/W Outdoor Track, M Cross Country, W Indoor Track
https://www.starnewsonline.com/story/new...981116007/

We did end up eliminating M Indoor Track but that's it

Agree, hopefully they continue this year's success and find that sustainable success like our baseball team over the years.

Says she wants "to pursue other interests following a decade at the helm of the softball program". Not exactly sure what that means, but at least wanted to see how we would do next year.

She ends her career at UNCW with a mediocre 217-250-1 record, so maybe she had already made her decision before this season started?

Edit: She also ends her career with the Lady Seahawks with a 66-107 CAA record

She had a phenomenal season this year, but that’s NOT a mediocre overall record. That’s a losing record.

I wish her the best in whatever interest she’s pursuing, and hopefully we find a good replacement that can sustain the success we saw this year. The softball team deserves that.
