Game #24 @ Charleston
i'm starting this because i'm bored right now and need something to do. sorry dan. you do a nice job otherwise.
i haven't seen much of charleston lately but the guy who stood out the most to me was meeks. he's one of those guys who doesn't look like much when he walks into the gym and then drops 15-20 points on you. it seemed like he could score in a lot of different ways. i see melik martin as our best chance to defend him. we have a good chance if we keep him in check.
otherwise i agree with dan in the other thread that hopefully we put two good efforts together in a row. northeastern is horrible so i don't think our effort had as much to do with it. they couldn't make layups and didn't defend.
what i'm looking for...and i'm sure coach spiker is looking for as well...is some consistency. bell got back to looking under control. where did that go for 3-4 games? coletrain was great in the first half against uncw. where has that been?
you would expect your upperclassmen to provide that stability and cam/butler have really struggled. okros had a nice game saturday...but again...is that just going to be a one-off and he'll go 0-5 from three tonight?
i'll still take us by 10. we seem to either go out and whip people or lose in a relatively close game.

RE: Game #24 @ Charleston
Kelsey was one of the lower level head coaches I was very interested in during The Great Coach Search due to his up-tempo style of play when he was at Winthrop. I'd imagine #ThinkBigPlayFast would still be alive today if he were here. Very interested in seeing how we handle Kelsey's up-tempo style in our first look at it. They don't look to have anybody that should be able to hang with Amari so maybe we can try slowing things down a bit by letting him work and hopefully Cam, Bell and Melik attack the basket because they foul at a high rate while defending the three pretty well. Only issue is that the only thing consistent with this team is alternating wins and losses, and they're on the loss side this game. I'll go with Charleston by 5.

Charleston made a three to go up 74-64 with 1:53. You got within 2 with 39.2 seconds left thanks to Charleston missing the first of a one-and-one twice. I think you should have played defense, but you fouled Reyne Smith, who leads the country with a .948 free throw percentage. You were down 3 with 1.4 seconds left when Washington got fouled in the act of shooting a three. He missed the first, made the second, and you didn't get the rebound of his intentional miss. Charleston won 79-75, so it was a push against the spread. You shot field goals .4915, and Charleston had 1 more make and 1 more miss to shoot .4918.
Washington led you with 21 points including making 6 threes. Wynter had 13 points and 8 assists. Martin had a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Williams had 9 points, 11 rebounds, and 4 blocks, but he didn't shoot well with field goals 3-7 and free throws 3-6. Butler played only 13 minutes, made his only field goal attempt, and did not get a rebound.

RE: Game #24 @ Charleston
Well KenPom was really close with their prediction. Final was 79-75. It really stinks that they took away the basket at the end of the first half. That cost Drexel 2 very needed points. We knew it would be tough for Drexel to fly down to Charleston for 1 game after playing a Thursday/Saturday. They didn't play well overall with the exception of Coletrane's great shooting that kept them in the game. But Drexel did, what they didn't do against Hofstra, and that was played their asses off and fought to the end to make it interesting after trailing by 10 with 1:40 left. It's a shame that Coletrane missed that first free throw after being fouled with 1 second left, but in reality, he saved them tonight and put them in the position to even allow the game to be close.
Offensive rebounding was the problem tonight, and those 2nd and 3rd and 4th chance opportunities for CoC were the difference.

CofC had more offensive rebounds 13 to 7, but second chance points were 8 to 8. CofC had four players with at least 6 rebounds, including Nick Farrar, whose team-leading 17 points in 15 minutes off the bench were important.
You're tied for fifth at 7-7, and go to W&M and Elon, then host UNCW and CofC. Hosting CofC could be a battle for seeding. CofC is 6-6. They end with games at the four northernmost teams including a makeup game at Hofstra on Monday February 28. You did better against Delaware than against Hofstra, so if Hofstra is the 3 and Delaware is the 4, you want to be above CofC for the 5.

RE: Game #24 @ Charleston
We turned it on late but the effort early on was not there. We seem indifferent to rebounding, and Charleston took advantage, thankfully they kept missing many of those opportunities allowing us to hang around. Cam is having a rough go, and as our leader our games seem to follow him. If he is playing fine, making good decisions we do well and when he struggles, the team seems to struggle. This team has so much talent that a bad game from someone like Cam should not be the death sentence to the team, but it doesnt seem like that is true. Not sure if that is coaching or something else. But its maddening that our trend of inconsistency from game to game continues. Unless something changes, and fast, I just can't see us defending our title. We have the talent to defend it, but we are still missing something. This is not a good loss
