Football Viewership Update
Below is a summary of Sports Media Watch (SMW) published viewership ratings for the past five seasons (2017-2021). Ratings for all teams in the Power 5 conferences are included. Viewership data for UCF, Cincinnati, BYU and Houston are also stack-ranked.

Games packaged as conference media rights (CMR) are in the last two columns for each team. IMO, the notable aspects of conference media rights are 1) the high viewership for conference championship games (7% to 9% of each P5 conference media rights viewership) and 2) Michigan is a true media powerhouse within the B10.

Since viewership levels are largely driven by a combination of winning and opponents, the stack-rankings are shown within each team’s conference opponents. It is impressive that some teams with relatively weak on-field results during the past five years -such as Texas, Tennessee, USC, Florida State, and Nebraska- are still able to attract good ratings.

42nd with the worst 5 year run in my entire lifetime. And probably a few lifetimes before that too. I'll take it.

RE: Football Viewership Update
Is this the same data base that used the NC State - JMU game as one of three data points for NC State?

RE: Football Viewership Update
Looks like the Big 12 is poised to go from a #36 average to a #47 average once Texas and Oklahoma depart.

RE: Football Viewership Update
Excluding games that Texas and OU played from conference media rights, the B12's five year viewership decreases from 431M (1.8M per game) to 142M (0.9M per game). Expanding with BYU, Cincinnati, Houston and UCF is not going to raise the average viewership. Bowlsby confirmed that Texas and OU are 50% of the B12 media rights value.

The B12 really needs CFP expansion. That increased revenue provides the funds for the B12 to remain a P5 conference. The on-field football product of the future B12 could be comparable to the PAC and ACC, but the B12 will lack a big media brand. Without CFP expansion, the B12 has a greater risk of becoming a tweener conference (not "Power" nor G5).

The above is a link to the raw data. If you played a game on the ACC network, your numbers are excluded.

This is true of the SECN, BTN, & PAC12N as well.

BTN started reporting ratings and viewership data mid-season 2020. It's the only "conference" network with publicly available data. I believe that start-up networks have a grace period before they have to make their viewership data transparent.

FWIW - there is 1.5 years of BTN viewership data in my analysis. BTN data helps schools in terms of # of rated games and total viewership; it hurts schools in terms of average viewership. On a net basis, it has negligible impact on the stack ranking order. Even though BTN is the media home of the Scarlet Knights, it didn't alter their P5 media brand ranking.

Statefan - the 2018 JMU visit to Carter-Finley remains a rated game. Fortunately, 2021 games against Clemson and UNC had 10x better viewership.

Well of course it does. That's my point.

On a hot ass day the first week of September while Texas-MD, and Oregon State-Ohio are playing NC State hosts JMU. At least there are 4 more data points that year, but when the raw data is cherry picked and decontextualized it means next to nothing. You think people in Carter Finley stadium were watching State play JMU, they all had their ipads and phones hoping to see Texas stomp a mudhole in Maryland.

****** kick off times and being places on the ACC network or ESPN bum **** will not generate ratings. Our game on Fox against UCLA would have likely been the most watched of the year and we got ****** out of that.
