RE: Timeline for WFT new nickname
Its official. Washington Commanders.

If they would have changed right away from Redskins to Commanders, fans probably would have hated it with a passion. But since they have been going with that awful Washington Football Team for a name, all they had to do was pick a name that was better than WFT, and Commanders is much better than WFT.

Plus I believe Commanders has more potential over time, a name that can be more closely associated with the Washington DC area. The team will probably over time drop any reference to the Old Redskins history and may even one day change its colors to match a more military theme.

It's meh, but in 20 years no one will care much. Consider:

There's an NFL team named for meatpacking.

There are two MLB teams (technically three) named for socks!

There are MLB, NBA, and NHL teams whose nicknames are holdovers from former cities that make no sense at all in their current cities.

There's an NHL team that got its nickname from a bad kids' movie.

Good points.

Yeah I'm not too thrilled with the name myself, but I agree that people will embrace the name eventually. Same with the Cleveland Guardians. I thought they could come up with something better after spending all that time and money, but oh well.

Apparently they're the only 3+ syllable team name that can't be shortened (Buccaneers --> Bucs; Patriots -->Pats), so people have started calling them the Commies! Works well with their colors to be fair.

P.S. The Mighty Ducks is a great movie!

Well if you're going down the route of the Commies, can always go a little further down that hole and call them the Red Army.

RE: Timeline for WFT new nickname
To be fair, most of the recent pro sports teams to not re-use an old name have sounded pretty minor league.

Kraken? Golden Knights? Swing and a miss, NHL (Winnipeg Jets = good, but that was their old team name)

OKC Thunder was meh, their logo made it worse, especially considering Seattle Supersonics was a way better name.

When was the last time a team name came out that you didn't think "well that's kind of dumb" for one reason or another? Outside of the MLS, I might need to go back to 2000 when the NHL got both the Blue Jackets and the Wild. If you don't like either of those two, then a little bit further back to the Avalanche.

Golden Knights is good. Knights is sort of similar to existing Kings. & you already have Blue Jackets, Red Wings, Blackhawks, etc. I'd just shorten it to Knights.
I sort of like Kraken, sort of don't. I'd change the logo from the existing boring (tentacle) S to something more interesting. But the name itself doesn't sound minor league to me.

The problem with the Knights: it's boring and it was obviously chosen because it was based off of Army. Essentially "reused" because it was the name of the favorite college program of the team owner.

Kraken? It's a mythical creature. That would be akin to naming your team the Centaurs or the Unicorns. The best local connection would have been going with the Sockeyes, because it's a local fish and also has the connotation of punching someone in the eye, which is hockey appropriate.
