SEC with zipper divisions, 1992-present
Had the SEC gone with zipper divisions in 1992, what would they have looked like?

Here's my stab at it:

Division A / Division B

Alabama / Auburn
Tennessee / Georgia
Vanderbilt / South Carolina
Kentucky / Florida
Mississippi State / Ole Miss
LSU / Arkansas

Each line represents a protected crossover, which preserves the Iron Bowl, Golden Boot, and Georgia-Tennessee. The Third Saturday in October becomes a division game, as does Auburn-Georgia and Kentucky-Mississippi State.

Then, fast forward 20 years later:

Alabama / Auburn
Tennessee / Georgia
Vanderbilt / South Carolina
Kentucky / Florida
Mississippi State / Ole Miss
LSU / Arkansas
Texas A&M / Missouri

This still effectively puts Missouri in the East, although they lose three of the four other schools in or north of the I-40 corridor. I have a feeling Texas A&M-Arkansas would be a point of contention, so it's likely the SEC winds up going to the alignment it currently employs in real life.

Would have been interesting, we'd probably have seen several Florida-Tennessee championship games back in the 90s.

I imagine you’d want to keep most of the permanent rivalries that developed naturally in the decades previous. You’d also want year-end games to be in-division, so Auburn and Alabama likely stay together. Third, you’d want to keep the two divisions as balanced as possible.

Pre-‘92 permanent games
Alabama: Auburn, LSU, Mississippi State, Tennessee & Vanderbilt

Auburn: Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi State & Tennessee

Florida: Auburn, Georgia, Kentucky, LSU & Mississippi State

Georgia: Auburn, Florida, Kentucky, Ole Miss & Vanderbilt

Kentucky: Florida, Georgia, LSU, Tennessee & Vanderbilt

LSU: Alabama, Florida, Kentucky, Mississippi State & Ole Miss

Mississippi State: Alabama, Auburn, Florida, LSU & Ole Miss

Ole Miss: LSU, Georgia, Mississippi State, Tennessee & Vanderbilt

Tennessee: Alabama, Auburn, Kentucky, Ole Miss & Vanderbilt

Vanderbilt: Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss & Tennessee
