Game #19 @UNCW
Here is a surprise to most. UNCW is 8-0 in the league after beating Hofstra over the weekend. The Towson loss was not good and it basically knocked us out of this game being really important. Instead this game will keep us in the 2nd tier of teams behind UNCW at the top. If UNCW wins this game, they will be heads above the rest of the league and a commanding position. We need this to not fall further. This UNCW team is not the same team that rolled out the ball in their nonconference slate. They have made some lineup changes and gotten healthier and the results are much improved.

UNCW is a pretty simple team, they are reasonably consistent with the past successful UNCW teams. They rely on pressure on the ball and turnovers. They then get to the basket off the dribble, and if its not there pass out for 3 point shots. They are not a particularly good 3 point shooting team, but hit enough to keep you honest. Force them to be a 3 point shooting team and they will have some struggles creating offense in the half court.

Phillips is their best player and facilitates their offense. At one point all the talk of this conference was between Cam and Phillips to be the face of the point guards in the CAA. Lets see who steps up tonight. Sims is their best shooter, leaving him open for 3 will not yield good results.

Towson showed that Amari is quite the defender, when helping to cover, but with a legit big man he can be backed down for easy buckets. Thankfully, few teams other than Towson have big men that can do that. UNCW is going to be 5 guards (basically) and look similar to JMU. Amari ate their lunch and we will need for him to have that same impact in this one for us to be victorious. Overall for Drexel, it is really quite simple. Take care of the damn ball. Let Amari take care of the rim protection. If we turn it over when pressed, we are in for a long game. If we get beat off the dribble and Amari is not making them think twice, then we are in trouble. If we play smart basketball and take care of the ball and keep it in the half court, there is no reason we can't win.

We are the more talented team. Based on our inconsistencies, and inability to take care of the ball against pressure, I dont see this one going our way, in fact I see it getting ugly. Not sure we will know how to handle a loud Trask. Short rest, long road trip. Smells bad for the dragons.

Drexel- 61
UNCW- 82

Vegas: UNCW -1.5
ESPN: Drexel 56.3% chance of victory

I wish this game were played originally than squeeze on an awkward road trip for us. I liked our chances originally. Not so much tonight. Coming off a game with Towson is draining physically. a sprinting match against JMU followed by a grinding physical game and back to a sprint is a bad recipe in 5 days

I might have to sit this one out, just because I find UNCW's broadcasts nauseating to watch. They use the arena feed for their telecasts but put give the arena feed priority over the fact that people are watching at home. Seeing a closeup of fans making funny faces after every dub basket is not how I want to watch a game at home.

RE: Game #19 @UNCW
I was out this evening and when I got home, the score was 25-11 Drexel. I was actually disappointed to see that score, because I still have a bad taste in my mouth from Saturday, and figure that if they go up by 14 or 18, it will just make things feel worse when the lead blows up in their face. Let's hope they can regroup, but with the momentum from the crowd fueling the dub, I don't have a good feeling about Drexel keeping their composure in the 2nd half. We'll see.

UNCW likes coming back. You went up 31-13 with 6:22 left. After that, UNCW scored about 3 points per minute in a 19-6 run, and you lead 37-32 at halftime. Wynter scored only 2. Washington made 4 threes, including 3 in 2:56, and leads all scorers with 14. He missed once. Butler only scored 2 because he only shot once, but he had 6 rebounds and 2 assists. Nobody else on either team had more than 3 rebounds. Bell scored 7. Williams made both of his shots to score 4, blocked 2 shots in 9 minutes, but had only 1 rebound. Mike Okauru was UNCW's only double-digit scorer with 10, and Jaylen Sims scored 9. You had 4 more rebounds. UNCW had 12 points off turnovers, and you had 0.

Yeah 5 point lead at half felt depressing after a big lead.

Bad loss. Game after game, same stuff. We run great offense, we give ourselves great shots and build nice leads. Then we stop moving on offense and we allow teams back in it. We have no clue to to get back into a game when things starting slipping. We still cant handle a press, either. Cam and Bell killed us this game.

RE: Game #19 @UNCW
I will say, the refs are not why we lost, not even close. But jesus the inconsistencies were ridiculous. We barely needed to touch them and they would call fouls and they ignore contact the other way. Reminded me a lot of the old VCU shaka teams. Where they foul a lot but refs decide they cant call much on them. But little calls make a huge difference in close games. Heading into half their guy boxed out butler and drove him to the 3 point line and no call, then late amari gets called for clearing out. Or one of the last buckets UNCW made, they drove and he barreled through Cam and I guess its no charge because Cam didnt fall? Instead of a charge and the ball back they get a made lay up. Or the foul under on washington on the break when all he did was step back and uncw player loses his balance, but its a foul called not a travel. Touch fouls one way and basically any contact the other. Frustrating to watch. Monday is not a heavy day so we should have better officials for a game like this. It definitely doesnt make it easy on the players who cant figure out what a foul is or isnt.

However 18 turnovers or whatever we had, are double what a team should have and has been a problem all season long. It is why the huge lead never felt safe. Every team in the league should continue to press us because we would never win.

RE: Game #19 @UNCW
UNCW won 70-63 with their largest lead. After they scored to go up 7 with 34 seconds left, you should have shot a three, but on that and your next possession, you went to the basket. If you make a two and the other team makes two free throws, you don't get closer. You should field goals better, and had 10 more rebounds, but they had 12 more field goal attempts because they had 6 turnovers to your 19. Steals were 12 to 2, points off turnovers were 29 to 2, fast break points were 13 to 0. dan10 was right about "inability to take care of the ball against pressure." Wynter shot 2-12. He had 8 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists. Your double-digit scorers were Washington with 14 and Martin with 12. Butler and Williams combined for 14 points with the only miss being Williams missing a free throw to not get a three-point play.

On Thursday at 6:00 P.M., you're at Delaware on CBS Sports Network. That is your fourth consecutive road game. Then you have off Saturday, and host JMU Monday February 7 to start a three game week.

For the stats side. Do we not understand game flow and situational basketball? Inbounds looked like Bruisers teams tonight. Total disaster. And if players are struggling why are we forcing it through them?

Cam: 2-12
Bell: 3-12
Rest of the team: 19-26 (including the bad prayer from the corner at the end)

5-24 vs 19-26. Why are those 2 taking shots when they arent falling? Makes no sense to me. If you keep shoving a square peg into a round hole, we should expect games like this to continue.

From 3:
Cam: 0-5
Bell: 0-1
Rest of team: 6-9
Rant over for the night

Coletrain lit it up early and then we never looked for him or did anything to free him up. We remembered bell can back guys down….but he had bigger guys on him so it was a bad matchup. Kept going to it though.

Same deal with our offense getting sped up and losing our composure. Basketball isn’t the gentlemanly game we want it to be. Teams will come after you.

It’s been said our team takes the nice guy personality of coach spiker. I think we take on the softness of cam Wynter. Doesn’t want to draw contact. Doesn’t want to step in and take a charge. Doesn’t keep things under control when teams bring the heat and is just as likely to turn the ball over himself.

I will say, there's a stark contrast between the men's and women's teams right now. The women have had some tough starts, but have made adjustments, regrouped, and come back for wins. The men have done the opposite. I don't want to point it directly on coaching, but when it becomes a trend, there are only so many places you can look.

RE: Game #19 @UNCW
watching the women has become one of the highlights of my weekend. i start things off on a friday night with a win and end the weekend with the same. really entertaining games too.

i'd like to see more minutes for tre brown. he might be the closest thing we have on the roster to a true point guard like nihill. sometimes he's been sloppy with the ball...but i also don't think he gets enough minutes to play through any mistakes he makes.
