Hitting end game free throws would have won this game and the JMU game in regulation.

Gee, seems so simple and obvious doesn’t it? Yet there are still people who don’t see it. By the way, the Tribe had only 12 turnovers and CofC had 16. How did we lose?

You watch the missed free throws and you just know that they are going to come back and haunt us. A loss like tonight just stays with you for awhile.but it still does not diminish the fact that this team is playing at a high level at this moment and has a chance to be a dangerous team down the stretch, something that I never thought that we would see this year. We just need to find a way to avoid the play in game.

It’s because your example above is a hideous outlier and anyone can see that. Elon won by 23 points so obviously their shooting 1-4 from the free throw line was irrelevant that game. Much more relevant that game was the 16-33 they shot from distance. Get a grip, man. Is your “manhood” so wrapped up in this that you have to make personal insults? Call me a coward? I suggest that you go reread the entire thread from the NCAA tournament either last year or three years ago where I did nothing but show prime examples from NCAA tournament games (no bigger stage!) where free throw shooting cost the teams games. Obviously, after today’s game, it was de rigueur that I say “How did we lose?” about the turnover differential (your favorite whipping boy) since you commonly say that about free throws. Enough! Everybody else on here knows the facts (see above).

Tell you what. Let’s make a deal, loser has to stay off this forum for a year. You put up your FTs garbage and I’m for the against. Loser is gone for a year. Deal? Just answer yes or no and we’ll set up a thread on OT.

It's super tempting to get you off the board for a year (a new moderator!!!). However, as with most things you write, there are no details about exactly what you mean. What would I be putting up? What would you show as the against (that old 1973 article you have posted several times, no doubt)? Lastly, and most importantly, who would be the judge? You? No thanks!

I will find and "bump" that previous thread I mentioned. I don't recall you having any rebuttal back then when it was written.

Here's the link to the Tribe Scribe article on the game.

https://tribeathletics.com/news/2022/1/2...k-bid.aspx

Here is the last line of the article, a quote from Dane Fischer:

"We need to clean up our focus in that one stretch. And we've got to make our free throws."

Hopefully that statement will lead to increased practice time spent on free throws. The team could use a little practice on layups too.

Applaud the effort and "no quit" attitude this team is showing - in this game and for the season. They got down 15 and fought back. They started off the season like a train wreck and they're putting in work and getting better every week. I respect that and it's a very positive reflection of the athletes and the coaching staff. It's hard not to pull for guys that are going out there and busting their a**es every week for the school and each other, win or lose.

Tough loss, but continued encouraging performance. I don't think there's a team on our schedule who looks at us as an automatic win. Not many 4-win teams can say that.

Rice has been pretty bad over the last five games too.

Lewis has made small yet perceptible improvements. But he has a loooong way to go.

Rice is starting, but losing a lot of time to Covington while Lewis moves over to the point. My take on Rice is that he's not tall and isn't a leaper. His foot speed is average, but he's very quick. He doesn't get open much without the ball. I think he can be a solid point guard for us, but he needs to get rid of the negative plays. Unlike Covington, his athleticism isn't going to cover up for it.

We really need another point guard somehow or another starting next year unless Lewis takes over and Rice moves to a backup role. I like Lewis as a two guard.

Agreed. Rice isn't the fastest guy on the court which would help make up for his size. But he is a good ballhandler. He does a great job shielding it away from defenders and rarely gets his pocket picked. It seems that most of his turnovers come from ill-advised passes.

Some of his passes seem to anticipate motion that does not happen.

A lot of his passes wouldn't be intercepted if the receiver moved to the. ball instead of waiting it. If they did,, they would draw a lot of fouls!! That is one thing that Coach Bryant taught at E. C. Glass in the early Sixties!!

RE: Game 20 at College of Charleston
While I wish that Covington and Wight made some free throws near the end of the JMU and Charleston games, I think the team is really improving. When the team plays defense and even partially limits careless turnovers, they are playing much better than they did in the nonconference part of the season. A young nucleus of Koechera, Covington, Wight, Milkreit, Hatton, Rice and Lewis is looking more promising than it was a month ago.

Brandon Carroll has also played very well and played excellent defense last night. His defense on the final bucket was very solid as well. Much like we saw in the past years when the Tribe was successful, there are still potential important roles for Carroll, Harvey and Blair potentially in February and March. Maybe even a few big moments for Ayesa as well.

I know many of us are disappointed with the losses against JMU and last night, but with the exception of the Towson game, all the games have been interesting and competitive. If they can win both upcoming games against Elon, they would be set up for a big following week at home vs Charleston and the Gold Rush game against UNCW. All those games will be critical since most of the remaining schedule after those games is on the road.(5 of the final 7). If they don't win several of the next 4, the play in round is still a real possibility. But, they won 2 early that might have been fortunate, so overall 3-4 might be about right so far. But, they are trending in the right direction.

2-4" of snow predicted for Williamsburg and entire Tidewater area for Fri night and Saturday morning. Would say there is a very good chance Saturday's game will be postponed...announcement may come tomorrow if forecast remains the same.
