WAC HQ Location
Currently, the WAC headquarters is located in Englewood, Colorado. This is a little unusual since the WAC has no member institutions located in that state.

My question is this: given that the majority of the WAC membership is now based in Texas, does it make any sense to move the WAC headquarters from Colorado to Texas? Or perhaps move it somewhere else in the WAC footprint?

That’s where it has been for a long, long time. I am not even sure how much space the WAC HQ encompasses. Maybe a floor at best in a big office building? Certainly, COVID has changed the way a lot of meetings are held. If they’re mostly by video, it doesn’t matter where everyone is. How often does WAC leadership actually need to visit schools? They can just take a trip to Texas and visit them all within two weeks. Probably easier to fly out to Seattle, Phoenix, Utah, and California where they’re currently at, than if HQ was in Texas.

If this were 1995, yeah they should probably move to Texas, but I don’t think it matters too much in 2022.

Before answering that, what is actually at the headquarters? Really don't know. Maybe it's just a spare bedroom at Jeff Hurd's house or maybe it's an entire six story office building with an indoor gym and liveried doormen.

But one would guess it's a modest office suite housing a handful of long term staff, the commissioner, a couple store rooms, and a conference room that hasn't had a serious meeting since Zoom became a thing.

If the only people working there are staff the WAC doesn't want to fire, there's probably no compelling reason to make them sell their homes and uproot their families. Wouldn't want to it be exactly in the same town as one of the member schools, and Denver is easy to get to.

Well the office building itself isn't all that big. I mean, it's okay but not huge huge. And the offices are on a 3rd floor suite. The 3rd floor has several other suites with other businesses.

The mailing address is for Englewood, but the physical address is actually in Greenwood Village in the KORE Building. I didn't take pictures myself when I visited the place years ago, but I found some on the Internet that I've screenshotted from Google Earth.

I was into sports management in college and visited the Mountain West headquarters and Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, as well.

You also have to understand that when the WAC first leased the office space, they still had CSU-Fort Collins and Air Force as members with BYU and Utah as well as Wyoming right next door in neighboring states to form the core of the WAC at the time.

Thanks for the pictures, now I've got a much better idea.

Most conferences are like that. At least the WAC offices have a Hyatt and Sheraton as well as some lower-end hotels nearby. The Mountain West offices--or at least when I saw it last--was a similar sized building (EPIC ONE Building in Colorado Springs) with nothing around it.

Conference USA's office building (the Nokia Tamko Building in Cypress Waters, Texas) is also very similar in size to the one where the WAC offices are.

Well, they’ll need to take most of those logos in the 3rd picture down.

Well it doesn’t make much sense for C-USA to still be headquartered in DFW—they should take over their lease.

The photo was from 2020 when Cal State-Bakersfield and Missouri-Kansas City were still in the league. I would imagine that they have redesigned their space some since then, but it's compacted in the same sectioned off suite.

CUSA still has a Texas presence, and I don't think that league is done pulling members in from Texas, but that's for another topic.

I get it’s an athletic conference but what do you think they have all those sports water jugs there for? Are they running wind sprints before their morning meeting?

Oh no! What will I ever do that my post got reported on the realignment board? You’re very petty. Go watch some Jacksonville State games or something.

I want the WAC headquarters to take up shop in my favorite named New Mexico town... Blackwater Draw. Renovate that old stadium in to an office complex.

I'd say Silver City.

I know some of the Utah schools wanted the office to move to outside Salt Lake, but I'd be shocked if it doesn't move to Texas, probably to the DFW area, within the next 18 months.

And yeah, they're not big buildings....when things resettle, I imagine only about a dozen people are going to technically work out of whatever office the league picks.
