at least he is sticking it out unlike Clyde Drexler who just up and quit midway through second season.

He's in year four. The question becomes how long does Memphis stick with him? No regular season chips. No conference tournament chips. No NCAA tournament appearances. What good does the recruiting do if you can't even finish above 3rd place in the conference [currently 7th]. I'll leave that to the Memphis brass with the higher pay grade than me.

I am disappointed as I thought he would bring Memphis back to prominence. I think they give him another year then maybe can him if there isn't some improvement. He is def feeling the pressure mount.

He signed a $12.25M contract extension in 2020 that takes him out to the 2025/26 season. That will factor in as well but yeah he'll likely get another year.

I sure do, coog. Not condoning what Penny said, but ask a dumb question and you get a dumb answer. Right coog?
It wasn't a dumb question though. The only thing penny has proven he can do is recruit and beat Wichita. I don't think anyone without Memphis blinders on can think he has what it takes to get it done.

Looking back at how Memphis's season went last year, they were only 7-5 on Jan. 21st, 2021.

They finished the regular season with a 7-2 run to wind up 15-7.

They went 1-1 in the AAC tournament

Then, then went 4-0 in the NIT and won the NIT tournament championship.

Perhaps they will "peak late" again this season.

.

It's too late for that

03-lmfao Have you ever watched a John Calipari presser? Or Jim Calhoun? Bobby Knight? John Chaney? Mike Leach? Herm Edwards? Dennis Green? Hal McRae?

Coaches pop off at the media all the damn time when they don't like the question, especially after a tough loss.

You guys have bitched for 4 years that Penny shows no emotion, so now he finally shows some, and that's wrong, too. 03-hissyfit

Trap question. "So Penny, have you come to the realization yet that you can't coach?" How the hell do you expect anybody with balls to react?

Oh, and Calipari banned that same Geoff Calkins from campus for asking questions just like that, and writing articles like that.

I'm not defending Penny's actions. That's his issue, not mine. I'm just saying you guys act like nobody ever did that before.

Can't remember any of those coaches going into an F bomb filled rant.

Yet again... It's a very valid question to ask if he has confidence to get it done... Because no one else does.

Also the question you listed isn't what was asked. So stop spinning ****.

Here's a little F bomb filled rant for you. And all kinds of coach meltdowns on YouTube filled with cursing, stomping and ranting. Look'em up yourself.

As for the question, here is the exact quote:

“Have you ever lost faith that you can get this done?”

Trap question. If you say yes, you are admitting you're over your head. If you say no, you're not convincing anybody. Question is simply designed to get a reaction.

From another CA sportswriter:

"On the one hand, how was Penny Hardaway supposed to answer that stupid (bleeping) question? Has he ever lost faith that he can get this job done? No Memphis basketball coach should ever admit that."

Did Penny handle it correctly? Of course not. I said I didn't condone it.

But look at the question again “Have you ever lost faith that you can get this done?”

To make a point about the question, I paraphrased it as "So Penny, have you come to the realization yet that you can't coach?" Please explain to me how those are so different, lol.

Does any sportswriter ask any other coach in the country if they have lost faith in being able to coach? News to me.

Tell me how Jim Calhoun would react to that question.

Or John Calipari. Hell, he went off on Memphis sportswriters on a regular basis. Banned Calkins from access to the team.

Or Bobby Knight. Or dozens of other coaches.

You act like this never happened before. That was my point. It has.

Sportswriters ask leading questions, and coaches lose their cool in curse-filled, stomping hissy fits much more animated than Penny. Often. Dozens of examples online.

Yet all of your examples are coaches who have won at the highest level...while Penny hasn't won at basically any level in college (zero conf titles...only a NIT title to show for his almost 4 years of coaching...and thats with 2 top ranked recruiting classes in the bank).

He has a "good" conf record of 35-23 (tendency to struggle on the road) but most thought Memphis would have several titles by now do to his great past recruiting classes.

Since Penny took over, here is where Memphis stood in preseason conf polls:
2018-2019: 4th (finished 5th)
2019-2020: #1 tied with Cincinnati, (finished 5th)
2020-2021: #2 (finished #3)
2021-2022: #2 (currently in 7th)

Even with all of those great recruiting classes, Penny has never exceeded preseason expectations and probably won't meet Penny's expectations of a nationa title this season.

Lastly, only a fool would compare Coach Penny to any of those noted above.

Thanks Central Florida for all your analysis on Memphis, we really appreciate it.
The rub though, was the snarky question to Penny of 'are you embarrassed'. There's an old saying, 'don't kick sand in someone's face'. The reporter asked it and he got a snarky response back. it's over and done now and ready to move on. I'll keep supporting Penny until the wheels have fallen off.

YOU are the individual spinning sh!t, Meadowlark.

The truth is you are STILL smarting over that humiliating 82-64 beatdown Penny and the TIGERS laid on Wichita's @ss in your backwoods crib out in the Kansas boonies.

And your Shockers will endure another one later this month at the FedEx Forum in downtown MEMPHIS.

Penny addressed the question from a smarmy sports writer - and Calkins is one smug columnist, a lot of Memphians will attest to this. Calkins even polled the readers AFTERWARDS about his question and the vote was fairly even regarding if it was a fair question or not.

As TripleA noted, it was a set up question that any answer could be twisted to be "wrong".

Anyway, I am looking forward to MEMPHIS smoking the Shockers again in a few weeks.

Ah yes, can't logically pinpoint how my statement was incorrect so you bring in something irrelevant (Memphis beating WSU).

Here.... Penny has OWNED WSU. There is no debating that.

The problem? That basically his ONLY accomplishment since becoming coach of Memphis. No league titles, no tourney bids, nothing else (oh yeah he won the consolidation tourney... Whoopdy doo). So when someone asks if he has confidence to get it done... It's a valid question. No one else has confidence he will at this point. So maybe... Just maybe he should grow up and take some accountability for once instead of constantly throwing his players under the bus and making excuses.

RE: is Memphis where talent goes to die!
The thing that boggles my mind is how many Memphis fans continually rush to his defense. Now that’s some loyalty. He was a great player. He’s a great recruiter. But apparently he can’t coach.

They wanna continue to wallow in mediocrity, so be it.

Read more carefully. I'm not defending Penny. What he did was unprofessional. I also don't think he is going to be successful at Memphis.

All I took issue with was Stick saying this has never happened before. Sure it has.

Also, I didn't get the memo where it's okay to cuss out the media if you're successful, but not if you aren't. 03-lmfao

I'll give you another hint. The entire fan base is upset. I don't know anybody who is supportive of Penny right now. The only debate is whether we fire him at the end of the season, or give him one more year.

But right now, it looks like the money guys are willing to go another year, so the whole debate is likely moot.

The only pushback here is a few of us objecting to posts that are inaccurate or silly. Like nobody else ever used the F bomb. Calhoun sure as F did, lol. So did Bobby Knight.

Or, like you have to be successful to deserve pitching a public fit. Plenty of unsuccessful coaches and managers have pitched fits. Plenty of videos out there.

Why is Cincy throwing shade about being mediocre? that's the pot calling the kettle black, for sure.
