How many MAC basketball coaches get fired after this season
MAC has many teams with terrible net rankings and multiple years of mediocre results and lack of post season trips in a while. Wonder who goes after this season.

CMU, NIU, EMU safe obviously.

Huger is probably gone at BG if they dont make a run.

I know nothing about BSU besides that their fans arent happy.

Buffalos could be gone if the program is directionless.

Ohio, Akron are safe unless poached.

Senderoff at Kent? Meh, they seem content to be above average with good seasons every once in a while.

WMU is very bad but with only 2 seasons to go off of, youd have to look at investment to mbb. Do they even care to win or that he isnt recruiting well?

Toledo has a new AD coming in.. if Coach K does anything but win the MAC, the fans will want him gone. I just doubt you fire a 20 win coach in the MAC. Hes been consistent and the team is young.

I like Miamis coach but you cant go .500 in THIS version of the MAC with a bunch of seniors and veterans. His team will likely be pretty bad based on returning production. This could be a good time to let go.

Mike Huger is as safe as Jason Candle.

(He has two contract years after this one. I don't think he's going anywhere.)

I think the Whitford era has run it's course in Muncie, but the admin will probably let his contract run. So I wouldn't expect any changes until 2024.

I think this is the answer for any MAC school these days. I don't see any schools in this league with the money or appetite for buying out contracts.

The real question is who doesn't get renewed when their contract comes up.

RE: How many MAC basketball coaches get fired after this season
I don't see a lot of turnover. Whitford at BSU hasn't had a great year in a decade there (some decent ones) and this year's team is down a bit, but not bad. Guess it depends on money as he's under contract for a few more years. I think he probably survives and gets a shot to trend back up. Huger should be fine at BG. Alum who has put a lot into the job. Guys seem to like playing for him and they haven't had any bad years under him, although there was some disappointment last year's team didn't live up to expectations. Whitesall at UB is probably on the thinnest ice. Lots of talent there and they haven't been able to totally put it together. He's also had a couple questionable recruits with guys getting into legal issues. However, I think he knows how to coach, and you can see individual development in his players. They just haven't clicked as a unit very often. Bates at WMU is on a short budget contract as a covid hire. Looking at the record he's gone, but he has a good recruiting class coming in and this year's team would have won a lot more if their best guy hadn't been hurt.

RE: How many MAC basketball coaches get fired after this season
Whitford is in year 9. Outside of his first two years, his teams have been decent. That is all I can say about him. His teams are basically all the same player, just of varying heights.

Whit's teams don't shoot particularly well and they don't rebound either. I can't think of anything Ball State has done really well over the last few years with him at the helm.

Also, he is 9-26 (.257) against whom I would consider the top 3 programs in the MAC (Akron/Buffalo/Kent). By year 9, that needs to be way better.

Personally, I think he would have been gone by now but Ball State doesn't have the money to buy him out. They have Linc Darner sitting in as an assistant just waiting on the chance.

Bates has been recruiting well, from what I understand reading the WMU basketball forum here.
We have a new AD so will be interesting what he does.

I would think he'll be here at least next year. Most our fans were willing to give him 2-3 years. He's on Year 2 now, Year 3 next year. We need to at least get back up to .500 next year.

RE: How many MAC basketball coaches get fired after this season
The teams that should consider it are WMU and Ball State. Bates is only in year two, but I just don't see the program progressing. As of now the program is sitting at NET 332 out of 358 teams. He inherited a 6-12 (in MAC play team) and went 4-12 in year 1 and is already off to an 0-7 start in year 2. They have 5 players averaging over 5 points per game. 2 of them are seniors and another is a junior so you can't even make the argument that they're a young team that needs time to improve.

Whitford I don't think has been bad, but it's clear Ball State isn't going to win anything meaningful with him. Indiana is a very basketball rich state. Ball State should be one of the MACs better programs. They haven't been for a while now. A coaching change could help that.

Miami extended Owens after last season but structured his contract with a minimal buyout. He's a nice guy and a very slight improvement over John Cooper, but just not good enough in year five.

Whitford is past his expiration, Ball State needs to find a way to move on because they should be a top four MAC program. Might not be in the cards based on financials, unless they hit up Letterman for help.

I think Huger still has multiple years on his contract. He still has time to turn it around.

Miami was way too veteran this year to be in the bottom half of the standings. The writing should be on the wall.

Ball State is long overdue on moving past Whitford. What are they even doing?

Three more years. Our AD has seemingly raised the possibility of moving in a different direction. Quoting the Toledo Blade here from a few days back:

David Briggs, Toledo Blade Wrote:While athletic director Bob Moosbrugger expressed support for Huger and excitement about the next wave of recruits, I asked him if Bowling Green is
committed to the coach for next season. “I’ll discuss that with coach Huger, and president Rogers, and I will discuss that after the season is done,” he said.

We are still in a holding pattern, but Huger has more than $1 million left on his contract. I'd be surprised if a change is made.

That was generous of the WMU coach to step down.

Wish Mark Montgomery would have done the same before 10 years of employment. Sean Frazier just kept giving him extensions.
