The divisions are so compact why are travel partners even necessary?

For non-divisional sports like Women's/Men's Basketball.

cusa has 2 divisions and uses travel partners. one set uab and muts are in diff football divisions. I can see a similar situation with usm, usa, troy + one of the ga schools

JMU to Marshall is 4hr. 45 min.
