A well deserved honor for Shumate.
Among the other nominees this week is Payton Sparks, the freshman Center from Ball State. It will be interesting Tuesday night when the Cardinals come into Savage to see how the Rockets and JT handle Sparks in the post. And of course, vice versa, to see how Sparks does against the Rockets skill and quickness. Will the big, young freshman chase Shumate out to the 3 point line or will Ball State try to slow the Rocket offense by using a zone? Will UT's big frosh, Carcoana, get any minutes to see how he matches up against Sparks?

Payton Sparks had the best week of his young career as he posted two double-doubles and averaged 20.5 points per game and 13.0 rebounds per contest. He was the most dominant player in the MAC on the glass over the week, with 26 total rebounds. In the game at Akron, Sparks produced a career-high 23 points and added 10 rebounds for his first collegiate double-double. Sparks produced another outstanding game on Friday against Buffalo, where he notched back-to-back games with a double-double. He recorded 18 points with a career-high 16 rebounds. His 16 rebounds are the third most by of any player in the MAC this season."

Sparks' best offers were from MAC schools including Toledo. If he keeps playing like he is I'd be shocked if he isn't in the transfer portal at season's end.
