RE: Alum or fan (Noun or Adjective)
I agree. There is a difference between alum and fan, and it’s an important distinction. Obviously (based off my handle here) I am a Coastal alumnus, class of 2011.

It’s funny, I was absolutely castigated on Coastal’s fan message board for suggesting that alumni should carry more weight than fans.

Good to see than many agree.

Money and time donated carry more weight than either alumni or fan status. People who attended or graduated from a school have a tie and reason to give back, even though most don’t. Anyone that gives freely with no ties to the program should be embraced and appreciated.

Of course they should be embraced and appreciated. I even appreciate wal mart fans (as few as we or any other G5 may have).

It’s a well established rule on our radio show, so you don’t have the power to change it.

I hope you don't do it too loud if you are representing AppState. We need the whole western side of the state to become an APPSTATE fan, even if they don't know the difference between a noun or an adjective.
Kind of bad timing for this debate. We just lost someone I call a true Mountaineer, noun, verb, preposition, adverb, etc. And she did not graduate from Appalachian.

Really pathetic to bring up a long time and very generous fan’s death to score points in a debate.
It is a pathetic conversation to begin with. We need to have everyone in our corner we can, wether they went to, graduated from, or are an interested partner.

I never once said one holds more weight than the other. Just that there is a distinction. Don’t like the conversation? Take your ass on to another thread. There are plenty of them to choose from.

By making a distinction, one does hold more weight. There’s no way it can’t, and we are in no position to be divisive and exclusionary.

A Honda and a Toyota are different. To say there is a distinction does not imply that one is inherently better than the other. Nothing I said was divisive.

I still don’t agree, but I’ll let that be the last word.

There's a distinction, but when you're saying one is a Mountaineer(or whatever) and the other isn't and never could be that's where I'd disagree and also where I'd say you are putting one down.

If you did, we would not have to tell you that you are being insulting.

My last word as well.

You are the noun. But if you didn’t you aren’t. You can never be a Mountaineer or eagle or Duke. You can be a fan. And that’s still good. You can give money, buy tickets, merch, whatever but you can’t be the noun, only the adjective.

Definition: Fan
noun: a person who has a strong interest in or admiration for a particular person or thing.

I identify as a Mountaineer no matter what your convoluted "definition" says. I married and fathered into the Appalachian family and am every much a Mountaineer as any alumnus- maybe more given my level of engagement and support. I get that you want to stir up conversation on your show and that's fine. I guess many in our AD Dept and Faculty aren't Mountaineers using your criteria...

Most of the VT fans I know are in fact alumni (or family of alumni) but as a general rule, you are definitely correct.

Truth! All it takes is one kid in a family to attend VT and the parents, grandparents, sisters brothers, cousin, aunts, uncle's are all Hokie fans!

ODU alum.
The next plan is to go to PSU for graduate school.

2X alum ('93 and '14) and I've always been a fan. My dad played independent basketball tournaments with a lot of the former and current (at that time) players. This was back in the 60's, 70's, and 80's.

Went to community college for a year and transferred to ODU in Fall of 09. Found out a football team and marching band were starting their inaugural year and I had to be a part of it. Was in Marching band for 4 years and graduated from ODU with a BA in music.

I grew up in Northern VA, also never heard of ODU until they played George Mason and of of my parent's neighbors who is an ODU alum invited us all to see the game in Fairfax. I even remember on my tour of ODU my parents asked me what I thought and I told them "well it doesn't matter because I'm not going here" thinking I was going to Penn State.

Parents told me the harsh reality of an out-of-state student going to Penn State and how much money I'd owe after gradutaion, so a VA school it was. Between Radford and ODU I chose ODU, and immediately I fell in love. I went to every home football game during my time as a student and for the first 2 years was front row at every men's and women's basketball game. Eventually my school spirit landed me on the cheer squad for a few years, and I am a life-long die-hard supporter. Graduated in 2015 (should've beeen 2013 but I partied a little too hard my first few years lol) with a BS in Civil Engineering Technology, and try to follow along as best I can with everything ODU related, and love how much teh school has grown since I first stepped foot on campus in 2009

RE: Alum or fan (Noun or Adjective)
I grew up 50 minutes, 90 minutes if you got stuck behind a bus or tanker truck...then about 35 minutes once the widening project was done and no cops were around, from Boone. My Brother went to App, I went to every home football game for around 4 years during high school, so naturally I ended up becoming a fan.

I ended up at ECU because they had the major program I wanted and I wanted to live near the Coast while I could, knowing the job market out there is **** I knew it would be difficult to live out there once I was done with college.

So here we are, I am an ECU alum and an App State fan. I follow ECU athletics loosely and wouldn't say I'm more interested in them then anyone else. Going there was a vehicle to get away from home.
