For UTA, you need a president that gives a damn about athletics and an AD that is in line with the President. Time to sweep out the dead wood.

Maybe we need a new leader or two, but your facts are skewed. For two years we have had an interim president, following the resignation of the previous one. The new President has been chosen and she will take office in the next month or two, pending UT system formalities. As for the AD, he's just a hired hand who only screwed up once so far as we know, by firing Scott Cross, the most successful men's basketball coach in school history. But we've beaten that horse forever and maybe Jim Baker deserves a break. If our new leader, President Cowley has a more open attitude about athletics.....
My sources tell me Baker is on the way out.
Yeah. We'll probably not miss him much. I'm hoping that he will leave the behind-the-scenes things in pretty good shape, unlike the messes that Pete Carlon had to clean up in the past. Budgets, facilities, community outreach, coaching hires and dealing with 18 year-olds can be challenging. Add to that the death of his wife while he was here and the abject failure of his protégé' men's basketball coach - it's been a tough ride. Bless him wherever he goes.

Think Pete would come back?

I read it a couple of times, but was a bit confused, but I see Gerry beat me to it. Karbhari was looking into football and Baker was hired when the president prior to him was in Austin asking around about football. I think Karbhari’s scandal was really problematic for us, but he certainly was a pro-athletics guy. I know Cross spoke well of him.

But there’s just no way an interim president would do anything but stay the course. Don’t know why it took so long to find a replacement.

I think he might. He rescued the UTA Athletics Department more than once after the 1985 debacle. For example, after the school administration threatened to pull all institutional funding, Pete engineered the student referendum that led to the athletics fee that put our olympic sports on a sound footing. His phone rang off the hook as other ADs all over the country followed his lead.

He is also one of the few survivors that served in the department during football, so he has real experience about how football will work if given a chance again.

And another thing - Pete hired great coaches like Donna Capps, Scott Cross, Clay Gould and a couple others whose names escape me now.

I hope he's willing and that UTA will give him a chance to do his magic again.

RE: UTA to the WAC
Got the email from UTA

I wanted to reach out to you all personally and let you know that within the next hour our UTA Athletic Department will be announcing the official decision to accept a bid into the Western Athletic Conference (WAC). UTA will make this jump upon completing the 2021-22 spring sports season. We will be the 15th conference member during the 2022-23 academic year, and the eighth from the state of Texas, making for some excellent rivalry opportunities (new and old) with the likes of Lamar, ACU, SFA, UTRGV, Tarleton, Sam Houston and Incarnate Word.

If you would like to learn more about this move and the exciting opportunities to follow, feel free to read our full press release going out to the general public soon. We also will be hosting a virtual press conference with Brian Thornton (WAC Commissioner), Jim Baker (UTA Athletics Director), and Teik Lim (Interim UTA President) this upcoming Monday, Jan. 24, at 2:00 PM. We will be posting the link to view online at http://www.utamavs.com, and on all of our social media platforms (More info to come). With that being said, if you have any questions you would like to potentially have answered during the Q&A session, please click here to complete the linked question response form. We will do our best to get them added to the queue.

We truly cannot thank you enough for your continued support throughout the past couple of years, as our athletic department and its student-athletes have continued to push the envelope of success in everything we have done. All while battling through the challenges and adversity we have been presented with year after year. However, we are excited about what the future of UTA Athletics holds. A change in conferences and a Master Plan (with the potential of new facilities and added teams to our department) are just a couple of the many highlights we have to look forward to in 2022 and beyond!

The WAC gives us an excellent opportunity to penetrate the UTA Athletics brand into some of the biggest metropolitan areas in the country in Seattle, Phoenix and Los Angeles, while simultaneously helping rekindle old Texas rivalries. We are excited about the vision and goals the WAC has in place for the future as they align perfectly with ours, and we believe this will help position UTA Athletics to compete for championships and NCAA Tournament berths year after year. We’re looking forward to having you join us on this new and exciting journey!

Feel free to reach out with any questions or concerns. Otherwise, as always, MAV UP!

I felt like not getting the MVC invitation was a real blow to UTA. However, realistically I wonder how much interest schools like Drake, Northern Iowa, Valparaiso, etc. would create in Arlington. Traveling to cold weather states all winter certainly has its downside as well, and who wants to play baseball up north in February and March (and even in most of April). The WAC will provide you with a ton of natural rivalries and put you in a much better position to get to postseason play. Looking past the initial disappointment, the WAC may be the best move for you at this point in time.

RE: UTA to the WAC
And I think it is, the MVC would of been fun for basketball since it is a superior bball league to anywhere we could go or have been... but for the other sports, not ideal ... WAC is WAY better for travel and regional rivalries ... plus in the wacky case of events where football comes back, having a handful of close schools in conference would only be a boon for attendance and whatever tiny slicy of media coverage we could muster ... UTA is still a small school RE sports ... first step is admitting it ... now if things work out well, that could change ... we had momentum, lost it ... time to build some more I guess ...

I got the same email and this jumped out to me. My informal talks over the years indicate that both gender soccer, football and swimming and diving are potentially on the table.

If we needed to go to the WAC to expand, it’ll make the move a bit easier to swallow for me.

And I agree that our ACTUAL profile is WAY different then our perceived look ... yes, 40K students ... yes in a major market ... but our actual profile is still quite small ...

if WAC leads to football, awesome ... it makes sense for UTA at the FCS level, with built in darn near local opponents ... attendance is on both sides of the bleachers, no harm fudging the number of paying guests ... plus makes a better atmosphere ...

There I go again, letting hope crop in

I agree. I am really OK with the move to the WAC. I think we would be among peers athletically. I believe our size gives us big potential, but we have never gotten close to achieving that potential so I don't know why that would change. I also believe the WAC could become a pretty good basketball conference. ( So we need to step our basketball program up)

I wish you all the best. My desire, as would have been yours, I’m sure, would have been for UTA to have added football and become a travel partner for Texas State. Maybe that’s for another time. Kick some tail in the WAC.

Thanks Appreciate it. 04-cheers

Yes, we prolly all wanted the same, however without football, we still were Texas State’s travel partner.

Best of luck to UTA. One of the first Southern Miss football games I saw in Hattiesburg was against UTA in 1981. I’m sorry we won’t get to share a conference, but go kick ass in the WAC.

Question for UTA fans: The Press release really talked up renewing the rivalries with the old Texas Southland schools. Do those rivalries really interest you, or would you have preferred the MVC with more recognizable basketball names?

Thats a tough question for me. I was hoping that being in the MVC would have made recruiting a little easier , but I am really excited about renewing the old rivalries and starting some new ones with GCU and the Utah schools and the Lancers. I really believe this league has potential to become a good basketball league.

Great question, but come to expect good things from you in the just under a decade I was on this board.

It’s a two prong issue. The MVC is clearly a better conference by the rankings than the WAC or SBC. But there was no one we would have a natural rivalry with and would have needed time to develop a situation one (a la stAte and Louisiana).

The WAC is at the SBC ‘s level overall, but NMSU is leaving. The WAC isn’t at the MVC level surely. However, there’s an easy drive to a few schools where we can both take revenue at the gate or go see the team on the road. Rivalry games drive attendance, as we’ve seen with Texas State, rivalry games drive good attendance numbers. It was nice having that rivalry as no one really considered us SLC rivals as we never had football. UTSA was closer to TXST and Lamar was too far away with no meaningful games save baseball tournament finals. My hope is we can get to more postseason tournaments and have more fans from both sides show up.

In the end, I’m more hopeful in the WAC. It did suck to hear the MVC rejected us after the SBC did too. But in the end, it could be a good thing. The big thing is, we just aren’t with peer schools academically.
